Great culture and respect for work-life balance. Flexible hours. Pay was decent before they started having trouble getting work and went though pay cuts. Benefits were decent before pay cuts and cutbacks. Strong supporter of continuing education and involvement in SEAOC with dues paid for and at least $800 a year available per person for life-long learning seminars, webinars or whatever the person is interested in.

Degenkolb was unwilling to modify their fee in order to place themselves more competitively in bids for a variety of jobs. This resulted in them loosing job after job and pushed them into more highly-technical jobs where they are still able to negotiate their higher fee.

    Difficult Interview

I applied online. The process took a weekinterviewed at Degenkolb Engineers (Oakland, CA).

First a technical phone interview and then a 4.5-hour in-office interview. Conceptual questions about steel and concrete. Often times want you to complete their sentences, which can be hard if you can't read minds and don't know what the question actually is. A little technical writing sample at the end. I learned that the large majority of their work in the Bay Area is healthcare, so if you want to work on a bigger variety of projects than solely hospitals, they might not be your ideal company. They take you out to lunch with one of their younger engineers.
