Many good people working hard to support larger and more complex structure. Senior management has been somewhat successful in selling a positive story to investors. Regular meetings with employees convey results and highlight successes and failures. Management cannot be accused of hiding in their corner offices.
Long term strategy is secretive if it exists at all. Organic growth is the white whale for most companies and Deluxe is no different. As a result, Deluxe is more tactical, blocking and tackling to offset weak results with acquisitions and expense reduction. Schram is a master at this and the right man for the job if you are a shareholder - not so much for employees that ride the waves of uncertainty and results volatility. Culture is wary of layoffs and capricious firings. Managers hire and fire too often, rather than investing time into training and building teams. There is heavy turnover in departments that have poor supervisors and managers. This ripples out to nearby departments. The divisions are plagued with stale thinking and very focused on defending market position rather than creating a new growth story or innovating existing products and services. Post-acquisition strategy often poorly executed, has inadvertently slowed momentum of the new business through clumsy integration and poor sales positioning.
Advice to Management
There are really not many alternatives to what Deluxe is doing, which is keeping the company chugging along. Hire some game changers and put your best people on acquisition integration. This company will be around another 100 years.
