I worked at Downer Group (More than 3 years)

ASX50 clients; large, diversified business with strong brand name; a lot of autonomy in roles, flexible working arrangements

There is no alignment between business strategy, vision, mission and values (pillars) and the people. Top leadership does not drive alignment... most employees would not be able to even describe to you what Downer values or looks for. There is very little, if any, opportunity for training and development - Downer does not support its people, promotion, career development. Just have a look at its website, as compared with competitors - very little mention of valuing its people. The business is constantly restructuring and there is very little trickle-down information with employees moving every few months without knowing why. In times of trouble... fruit bowls were taken away. No systematic performance reviews; exit interviews discouraged.

    Advice to Management

Value and grow your employees! They drive the customer relationships that create success, and are indeed, part of the relationships that create success. Build your internal quality to drive external value, for ultimate growth and profitability. Leadership has the opportunity to drive a culture that respects, values, supports and rewards employee productivity and loyalty. Drive employee satisfaction surveys! There is no measure of internal quality in the business which demonstrates that top leadership does not care about what its people think or feel about their jobs and company.

I applied online. I interviewed at Downer Group.

Two interviews, relaxed and friendly, made me feel comfortable, nothing too taxing was asked. Parking was easy to find. The whole process was smooth. No need to be nervous. I was well prepared so felt confident. Would recommend leaving plenty of time to travel and reviewing your CV.
