I worked at Florida Southern College part-time for less than a year

    Pros

beautiful campus, very nice people, decent benefits for being part time, lax atmosphere, steady hours (sort of)

as a PT employee, you are given vacation time after 60 days, depending on when you start -- i got a full 2 weeks which is unheard of in most PT positions. the majority of the people working there have been there a while and are very nice to be around. i worked around security a lot and they showed me around some really cool places on campus. i was also given a personal trainer at the gym. Dr Kerr is a tad intimidating (she's the president!) but she is a very nice woman. i had a lot of personal things going on in my life when i took this job and my manager tried her best to work with me. that says a lot about the atmosphere, IMO.

if you are looking for a decent part time position as a student or a second job, this is a great place.

    Cons

99.99% chance you will NOT get a promotion or ever be full time, the payrate is not terrible but they could definitely afford to pay employees more (its a $40k/year school after all!), the parking situation is horrendous, no advancement in some departments

i was hired PT but with 36 hours/week. after the ACA mandate in Oct '13, i was cut to 29 hours/week so they would not have to provide me with healthcare or other benefits. that's a huge cut and there was no notice given nor was there any kind of compensation for it. that equates to losing a couple hundred dollars a month and was eventually why i left my position. there is also no way to get above those 29 hours/week and in my department, there was absolutely no where to advance to. as for parking...it's a medium size population campus (i guess?) and the students overrun the parking areas (and park horribly). there is absolutely no where for employees to park and some days i'd spend 15-20 mins looking for a spot and would end up four blocks away from my building.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

the school is VERY well off, you could afford to give benefits or better pay to some of your lower employees. get your employees a parking garage or assigned parking!
