I have been working at Foliage full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Foliage is a great place to work if you are an experienced engineer with a proven track record, and are looking for a place to broaden your skills, both technical and "domain specific." Over time, you will work in a variety of industries, and gain a fresh appreciation for how much you didn't know - and how much you have yet to learn. Some of the stuff we work on is really cool, and you will get to work with a variety of experienced and talented engineers.

It is an especially great place to work if you are a software engineer who has previously worked at companies where software was not the primary focus of the business. Foliage provides a variety of engineering services to their customers, but their primary focus is on software intensive projects. I've found it refreshing to work at a company where top management really understands the business of software development.

    Cons

    1. Not every project is great. You may get stuck on a project that is dull or just drags on. Fortunately, it probably won't last too long, and your next project will probably be better.

    2. If you are looking to climb a corporate ladder, you might be better off at a product company. Foliage is best for strong technical people who want to remain technical.

    3. Because of customer confidentiality agreements, you may not be able to tell your friends about the really cool stuff you are working on.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Foliage has grown significantly over the past few years, and recently became part of a much larger corporation, Altran. Please do whatever you can to maintain the small company feeling and unique culture of Foliage.

    Principal Software Engineer Interview

    Anonymous Employee  in  Burlington, MA
    Anonymous Employee in Burlington, MA
    Application Details

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 weeks - interviewed at Foliage in February 2014.

    Interview Details

I applied through a referral from a friend (they have an excellent referral program). ASenior Technical Contract Recruiter emailed me shortly after and did a phone screening. An on-site interview was scheduled. I met VP of Human Resources, Technical Director, Principal Software Engineer (potential peer), Director of Software Engineering (hiring manager). The whole process was about 3 hours.

    Reasons for Declining

Position and compensation were not commensurate with my experience.
The company was stable, had great culture and great people. They offered flexibility and self-governance. The work was diverse and excellent for building broad and deep skills. The 401K plan matching and employee referral are great.
