Our Heritage:

General Dynamics C4 Systems (GDC4S) has more than 50 years of experience providing secure command, control, computing, communication and information solutions that integrate custom-developed and commercial off-the-shelf products for the military and commercial markets.

GDC4S began as part of Sylvania Electric Products in the early 1950s. In 1959 Sylvania merged with General Telephone to become General Telephone and Electronics Corporation (GTE).

In June 1999, GTE and General Dynamics announced General Dynamics’ acquisition of three divisions of GTE Government Systems Corporation. On September 1, 1999, GSC became General Dynamics Government Systems Corp., an operating unit of General Dynamics within the Information Systems and Technology (IS&T) group.

In 2001, General Dynamics acquired Motorola’s Integrated Information Systems Group (IISG). The business was named General Dynamics Decision Systems, Inc., and reported through the Information Systems and Technology (IS&T) group, one of four primary business segments within General Dynamics. Following the Motorola IISG acquisition, nine IS&T units were consolidated into four. General Dynamics Communication Systems was selected as the core organization for one of the new business units, and became General Dynamics C4 Systems (GDC4S).

Programs We Support:

Military: We develop the Soldier’s Network – an integrated suite of programs to deliver voice and data services to our nation’s soldiers in austere environments. A foundational part is the GD-developed Warfighter Information Network – Tactical program, which provides soldiers a secure network that keeps them connected to one another and to their commanders, increasing their safety and improving mission effectiveness.

Space: Some of our systems are helping to discover the origins of the universe while others manage and control NASA's most advanced telecommunication satellites.

Department of Homeland Security: Using 21st century technologies, we placed a revolutionary search and rescue system into the hands Coast Guard professionals. Covering more than 42,000 miles of coastline, the Rescue 21 system has enabled the rescue of thousands of distressed mariners and their families.

Public Safety: We are among the first companies to deliver Long Term Evolution (LTE) user equipment to first responders. Working with Adams County in Colorado, our products and technologies will deliver next-generation broadband capabilities to public safety personnel. This means unprecedented access to streaming video, remote data access and information sharing.

I have been working at General Dynamics C4 Systems full-time (more than 5 years)

Different programs to work on that allow you to get a wide range of experience within the same company. Good pay and leadership potential. A realization from management that much of the culture is gray haired and top heavy. There is a recent push to hire younger engineers. Good work-life balance encouraged from most managers.

There is much more work than the number of employees to perform the tasks. Many managers are inefficient. Too much bureaucracy, primarily driven by the customer (Govt.).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus more on development of employees, especially younger ones. Put more money into R & D. Stop wasting time and money on boondoggles and useless programs.
