Local + Global Mentoring Opportunities
Recognizing the powerful and long lasting impact a mentoring relationship can have on one’s career, H+K has an active, global virtual mentoring program in place that connects colleagues from across our network with one another. Through weekly check-ins, staff interact with colleagues across the globe and discuss a variety of issues from professional development, career progression, challenging client assignments and other interpersonal topics.
Additionally, many of our offices have robust mentoring programs in place designed to foster an additional two-way exchange of perspectives. All new hires in our Austin, Texas office, for example, are assigned a mentor to help make their first few months at H+K as successful as possible. In 1927 as the nation was sliding into the worst economic disaster in history, John W. Hill had the courage to walk away from a secure job to follow his dream. Hill left a successful newspaper career to open a public relations firm in Cleveland. His early clients were banks, steel manufacturers and other industrial companies in the Midwest. When one of the banks failed, he partnered with its public relations director, Donald Knowlton.
Despite the country’s economic turmoil, Hill & Knowlton grew quickly. Hill moved the firm's headquarters to New York in 1934 to serve as public relations counsel to the American Iron and Steel Institute. Knowlton stayed in Ohio and operated Hill & Knowlton of Cleveland as a separate entity.
In 1952 when companies began expanding their business to other countries, Hill took advantage of the trend and created a network of affiliates across Europe. Hill & Knowlton soon became the first multinational public relations company. Hill managed the firm until 1962 and remained active in it until shortly before his death in 1977.
Hill & Knowlton was acquired in 1980 by JWT Group Inc. (J. Walter Thompson). WPP Group, the world’s largest communications services group, acquired JWT in 1987 along with Hill & Knowlton.
Meanwhile, Jack Martin, a former top aide to U.S. Sen. Lloyd Bentsen of Texas, started Public Strategies, Inc. in 1988 as a public affairs and business advisory firm. Its rapid growth and success eventually attracted the attention of WPP Group, which acquired Public Strategies in 2006.
In 2011, Martin became global chairman and CEO of Hill+Knowlton Strategies. H+K and Public Strategies, both of which are still owned by WPP, now share several executives from the leadership team. Each firm offers clients a unique combination of global expertise, world-class talent and strong corporate communications, public affairs, research and digital capabilities.
H+K Strategies today continues John Hill’s legacy as a global public relations and public affairs consultancy with expert reach, deep knowledge and a track record of client success. We have worked with more than half of all Fortune 500 companies somewhere in the world. FELLOWSHIPS/INTERNSHIPS @ H+K
Interested in starting a career in public relations? Well, look no further than H+K Strategies. H+K offers a full time (40 hours/week) paid fellowship (or internship) program designed to introduce recent graduates to the day-to-day business of a strategic communications firm and help develop the essential written and oral communication skills needed to move into a regular, full-time position with a PR agency. As such, we prefer candidates who have completed their undergraduate education, preferably in the Communications, Public Relations or Journalism fields (or related disciplines) and are available to continue on past the minimum three-month period.
Fellows (or interns) will be assigned to work with a mid-level liaison on their respective team. Assignments are generally made on the basis of staffing needs for each client account, but whenever possible, we will match the assignment with the intern's personal skills and interests.

I started at H+K as an intern 7 years ago and have been granted opportunities to work on various projects within various departments, giving me the greatest learning, development and promotion experiences. One of the biggest day to day impacts is working with a great team, who cares about the work we do and contributes to a positive, collaborative, supportive, and goal oriented work environment. Management is always open to and encourages new ideas, improvements and ways to make projects more creative. Also, H+K has put significant time and effort into delivering new industry leading benefits for 2015, including a fitness subsidy, paid time off, training, awards, flexible work schedules and a global mentoring program. The work-life balance has been a major plus for me, and something that would be more difficult to find elsewhere.Cons

Very smooth process. There was a phone interview and a face-to-face interview. Everything went really well. No questions were out of the ordinary and the interviewers were very friendly and easy-going. Process took less than 3 weeks.
