Don't take on-board job too seriously, and you will have a good time.

I worked at Holland America as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

The travel opportunities are amazing!! Even if you get stuck with a repetitive itinerary, you really can't beat it and it is the main reason why most people do this job. Most of the crew members are friendly and just want to have a good time. Enjoy the experience but don't take the job too seriously. Onboard HR tries hard to make things entertaining for crew members of all ranks. Good for a short time but have other plans for your future.

    Cons

Pay for most of the non-management jobs are pretty bad, so it can be difficult to save. A large majority of the passengers are really really really really mean and nasty. You may think that they just went on vacation to complain, frown, and be nasty to cruise ship staff. Passengers are very demanding and love to see crew members run around for them to make them happy. Lack of advancement opportunities. You can probably tell on your first day who will advance onboard to a higher position because they are hooked-up or the 'favorite' of the managers already, which results in many others wasting their time trying to work hard for a better position. Easy to get burnt out.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make the staff happy! Increased understanding between land-based and on-board staff of what the job entails and what we deal with.
