For getting down to earth in Space City, there's nothing like the Houston Zoo. The not-for-profit zoo occupies 55-acres in Hermann Park at the heart of Houston's cultural district. It is home to more than 4,500 animals from about 800 species and hosts about 1.5 million visitors per year. Facilities include the McGovern Children's Zoo, Kipp Aquarium, the tropical bird house, Texas Wetlands, and the Wildlife Carousel. The zoo participates in programs that oversee the breeding of more than 40 endangered animal species. Several of its facilities may be reserved for private...
The Houston Zoo employs approximately 300 individuals on a regular basis. (In addition to our employees, we also have around 650 volunteers!) This adds up to a substantial body of professionals and enthusiasts, whose commitment to the organization and our education and conservation efforts serve to make this zoo a world-class facility.
Within the Zoo, there are over 15 different job classifications, including animal keepers, maintenance and ground crew, administration, guest services, educational positions, marketing and development positions and senior executive staff.
Note: for most Zoo positions, experience and education are a must, especially for personnel who work directly with the animals. The reality is that our animal positions are highly competitive and require skilled individuals who usually have a background in a related life science field (e.g. biology, zoology, behavioral sciences).
