I worked at IP Casino, Resort and Spa part-time (more than 5 years)Pros
The Casino at one point rivaled to be the best on the coast. In business, work environment, money, and even part-time benefits. The employee discounts were better than average. Under the era of John Lucas, it wasn't a job; but, a family.
It was excellent when part-time benefits existed.
Discounted Med Analysis Clinic visits.
Discounted Gym membership.
They did offer "anonymous" annual employee surveys.
The opportunities for advancement were excellent. F&B middle management does a great job of recognizing talent.Cons
In the rat race to become full time, I was promised a chance at full time status. When the opportunity arrived, I was sent home for the better part of my final qualifying work week... sabotaged. That was during year 4.
During the 5th year Boyd took over. After giving the corporate version a chance I noticed the business model had changed for the worse. Customers became numbers, as did the employees. It became quantity, not quality.
The "Open Door" policy that was enacted during the takeover seemed superficial, unwelcoming, and conditional.Advice to ManagementAdvice
The next time Boyd Gaming decides to purchase a property. Take note of all the things that work for the property. The idea of reinventing the wheel to match your business model doesn't always work for the regional market. Morale gets stifled.
A HR figurehead should NEVER be excited over firing people. They were overheard at a mass drug screening celebrating people getting to lose their jobs. This (test) did not affect me - nor would it have. But, a figurehead of HR looking forward to releasing people echoed property-wide: a person that represents morale, became its disdain. I hope that's changed.
Upon leaving I noticed lower management seemed to operate out of fear - I realize the dust may have settled since then. Yet, when departmental "leaders" govern out of fear, "line-level" employees smell it. The ability to effectively lead by example becomes compromised.
You did a great job promoting anti-union. However, if you continue to bully your employees do not be surprised if you force that hand. Fear tactics, empty promises and false representation will lead to resentment. Resentment will lead to action. And you may not like what could potentially happen to your flexibility of power. Vegas is mostly union. The coast is not - so, return to your state of relaxed. There is always the alternative. We could look at history: unions "saved" us in the last depression. So... be careful, for what you wish.RecommendsNegative OutlookNo opinion of CEO
Getting an Interview
Getting an Interview
- Application Details
I applied online. The process took 3 days – interviewed at IP Casino, Resort and Spa.Interview Details
I got a call from the supervisor to set up an interview. I arrived about 15 minutes early because I wasn't sure where to go. I went to Trends to ask the employee to get the managers. I had to sit around and wait a good while, I kind of expected it since I arrived early. I ended up having an interview with 3 managers.Interview Questions
