You contribute to the development of new applications that quickly penetrate research labs and clinics around the world.
“The people are smart, fun, and passionate. I can always ask for help if I don’t know something, or when I want feedback on a new algorithm idea. I also enjoy spending time with them outside of Illumina.” - Jocelyne
“I chose industry over academia because I enjoyed the fast turnaround time of my efforts. What you’re working on now will be a product within a year or so, with a tangible impact on people’s lives. Being at the research department within industry is like an added bonus. It has all the excitement and satisfaction of exploring new ground while having a fast and tangible impact on society.”- Amirali

I have been working at Illumina full-time (More than a year)
Illumina is experiencing tremendous growth. Coworkers are very supportive and flexible. There is a sincere interest to change the world of medicine. The campus is beautiful and there is a lot of energy around the campus.
No issues or challenges to report. The company is solid overall. They just need watch after their culture and retain talent.
Advice to Management
Keep moving forward and as you grow resist the desire to become a slow large machine. Maintain the great culture and values you have. Remain independent and invest in innovation
I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Illumina.
A brief, meandering interview with a clueless recruiter. He called from his laptop and didn't have the courtesy or intelligence to use a headset. Despite asking him to talk to the position, he asked a bunch of basic questions about my background. The guy seriously gave an extremely poor impression of the entire company. Apparently they're on a hiring spree, which generally does not bode well for mean quality of employees (i.e., expect it to go down).
