da Vinci Xi Surgical System

The da Vinci Xi Surgical System advances minimally invasive surgery (MIS) for patients like never before by offering revolutionary anatomical access, crystal clear 3D HD vision and a platform built for advanced technologies. With this addition, Intuitive Surgical can now offer a full range of da Vinci systems optimized for highly complex, multi-quadrant surgery to simpler, single-quadrant surgery.

The da Vinci Xi Surgical System provides a natural extension of the surgeon’s eyes and hands into the patient. As with all da Vinci Surgical Systems, the surgeon is always in control.

The da Vinci Xi Surgical System combines the functionality of a boom-mounted system with the flexibility of a mobile platform. This hybrid architecture enables placement of the surgical cart at any position around the patient while allowing four-quadrant anatomical access.  

Visualizing anatomy in highly-magnified 3D HD is a hallmark of performing surgery with the da Vinci Xi Surgical System. A new digital architecture provides the best surgical image ever developed by Intuitive Surgical.

    I have been working at Intuitive Surgical full-time (more than 5 years)


    The company offers competitive salaries, low-cost medical, nice employee stock purchase plans, cash bonus and some stock options in an attempt to attract and keep talented people. Because the company is faster-paced, it's good to know you have quality talent around you. People on the whole are more accountable here because they do have a greater sense of ownership.
    The product is great and the company really focuses on how the product really helps people. The executive management team is very good and has the company moving in the right direction. ISI is the unquestioned market leader and has positioned itself to stay that way for a long time.


    The company is now too mature to be considered a start-up, so it's having a lot of new growing pains as it attempts to fight off pending competition. Managers who were good at pushing to get MORE productivity at any cost, just to keep up with explosive growth, are now struggling when having to introduce processes that maintain productivity while improving operational efficiency for long-term growth.
    While the executive management team inspires great confidence in the direction of the company, an alarmingly growing segment of middle-management is being exposed as ill-equipped and unready to transition this company to the next phase of maturation. Too many of these folks are there because of tenure, being rewarded after having survived very busy periods, and it's very apparent that they lack the skill set to match the changing requirements of the business. We've seen a mini-exodus where many of the good individual contributors who have grown the company, have decided to take their gains and start fresh elsewhere instead of suffering along.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Clear out the mid-level managers who are now holding the company back and causing the really talented employees to leave. Internal surveys and half-baked sensitivity trainings illustrate that the problems exist, but the employees are getting restless because we see too little actual change. Talk is cheap, time to start walking.

    I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeksinterviewed at Intuitive Surgical.

    Interview Details

    The interview process is pretty straight forward. The one thing that they should work on is doing their internal interviews first and then external. The job I applied for was filled by an internal candidate. The interview process felt like a waste of time for me since they already had their sights set on someone they wanted to hire. They did offer for me to come back and interview for another position, but I didnt want to be a fill in for whatever requirement they had for interviewees.
