WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

Like many members of the management team at JOEY, our President and CEO Jeff Fuller started his remarkable journey flipping burgers, washing dishes, and sweeping the parking lot.It’s called paying your dues, learning the business from the ground up, and understanding what it takes to succeed. “If there’s a secret,” he says, “it’s hard work, unwavering commitment to the customer, and putting together a team of the very best people you can find. ”Jeff had already absorbed valuable lessons from his family’s successful businesses before he struck out on his own to introduce a brand new concept in casual premium restaurants.The first JOEY opened in 1992 and, as word spread, demand grew so quickly that it wasn’t long before a second location was in the works.

We call each other partners, not employees and our teams, our family. Read on to find out more about Matin and what it's like to work on the IT team at JOEY Restaurants.

What attracted you to your role at JOEY?

When I joined, my role was focused on improving technical support. Some recruiters I talked to advised me to skip the role because it could be seen as a step backwards from previous roles, but I wasn’t looking for a job title, I wanted to get people excited and inspired while they did the same for me. I saw that as a real possibility when reading the charter that hangs on the wall at head office. It wasn’t long after I got hired that I saw the limitless potential of working at JOEY IT. Over the years my responsibilities and everything that comes with new responsibilities has grown. Since this job is in line with my personal values it also supports my personal growth as well.

In your opinion, what makes JOEY a great place to work?

What makes JOEY a great workplace is also what makes it a great restaurant for our guests. My favorite quotes right now goes ‘You are not a team because you work together. You are a team because you trust, respect and care for each other.’ Ultimately, we all want to feel that the people in our world are those we can trust, respect, care for and vice versa and JOEY fosters that view. It also promotes the idea that being a performance based organization and having fun while you’re ‘killin’ it’ go hand in hand.

Is there a particular person that you can say has mentored you on your path at JOEY Restaurants? If so, who was it and how did they make you a better leader?

There are plenty of people at both the restaurants and head office that inspire me to be a better leader. One quality they share is the courage to stand up for our values and challenge me, themselves or others to consider alternatives to prevailing systems. When you’re opening a space for a perceived limit to be pushed, you’re leading.

If I wasn't working in IT, I would be:

Recording Engineer or high school Teacher. A recording engineer works on the production side of music making. I think I have more aptitude for working with sound at the frequency level or at least on the compositional side than say playing the guitar or singing. I also spent a lot of time in high school thinking about how bad some teachers were and what I would do differently if I were in their shoes. Twelfth grade English seems like it would be a rewarding endeavor. Maybe even phys-ed? Those dudes were the worst.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Cheeseburgers. I grew up in Winnipeg and we have the best cheeseburgers on the planet. Every time I’m home, I’ll check out Dairi-Wip, VJ’s or one of the other dozen burger shacks (they’re literally shacks) for a ‘Fatboy’. If the burger shack and doesn’t have a Fatboy on the menu, it’s not a real cheeseburger!

Fun things you may have not known about Matin:

The head office culinary team inspired me to start baking bread at home. The naturally leavened, sour dough variety which involves the maintenance of a living starter and 18 hours from start to finish. I also shoot photos on 135mm film. Chris, what is it about cooking that inspired you to pursue it as a career?

The team work and competitive spirit of the kitchen brigade has always kept me inspired!

JOEY employs over 3000 partners throughout Canada and the US and continues to grow at a rapid pace. What traits do you look for in a potential candidate who is interested in joining your team?

We look for Coach-ability, Vulnerability, Humility and Care. These four traits are tops on my list and are very important to us when hiring at JOEY.

JOEY Restaurants has an incredibly strong Coaching Culture; you are one of 10 Accredited Certified Coaches within the company. Can you tell us how you became a coach and what it means?

I earned my ACC last year and am very proud of the countless hours of coaching that went into it. We partnered with Essential Impact five years ago and they not only taught us how to coach they inspired a change in the way we operated our company. Today we have a coaching culture in JOEY. Is there a particular person that you can say has mentored you on your path at JOEY Restaurants? If so, who was it and how did they make you a better leader?

I’ve had many mentors along the way but the people that stick out are the ones that influenced me during my early years. Al Jessa, CCO, Brian Plumber, GM Kelowna Dean Botteril, Chef Kelowna and Chuck Currie to name a few.

JOEY has a three year Apprentice Training program for Chefs who want to attain their Red Seal Certification, as well, host a variety of in-house culinary competitions for their partners. Do you have any fun competitions coming up in Calgary?

Our annual Certified Angus Beef competitionhappens this Sunday at JOEY Eau Claire with apprentices from all six of our Calgary locations. The contest has 12 teams of two competing for the grand prize which is a trip to the JALAS in Vancouver! We have chosen 12 countries and they must create one entrée, six plates of each using Certified Angus Beef. Their dish must be indigenous to the country's flavors and ingredients. This was a huge success last year for us! Check out the 2014 video here.

Your career revolves around cooking and food. When you have a night off, are you more likely to cook for yourself or go out to eat?

More likely to cook at home and practice some of my CCC dishes on my partner. The part I love the most about cooking is inviting a group of friends over to my place and watching how great food and wine can create conversations and laughter. JOEY gives me the perfect stage to perform this and practice some of my CCC dishes with my partner.

At JOEY, we encourage our cooks and sous chefs to achieve their Red Seal certification. Working under a JOEY Red Seal Chef in an industry leading three-year training program, our apprentices build a solid foundation through in-house projects and culinary school.

Culinary Culture & Culinary Club

We are very proud to have one of the healthiest Culinary Apprenticeship Programs in Canada and are in partnership with the Cordon Bleu, Seattle to where we have created a JOEY-led Apprentice program for our partners. We are a casual dining restaurant that takes a detailed passionate approach to cooking. Our cooks are preparing the same dishes day to day so to inspire better quality in their execution we have created a strong culinary culture within our stores.

We have partnered with culinary schools and education programs in each of the regions we operate in and send our kitchen partners to school and support them through their education. We organize culinary clubs in our stores and host culinary competitions, quick fire and black box challenges to drive the development of culinary skills and learn about dishes and cuisines that JOEY does not offer on our menu. The chefs also organize field trips to our suppliers to learn about the origin of our ingredients and how to prepare them.

    Work-Life Balance is the number one reason I have stayed with Joeys. I have also had the opportunity to work at 4 different locations In an assortment of different capacities.
