James Hardie Industries Ltd was founded in Melbourne, Australia in 1888 and became a publicly owned company on the Australian Stock exchange in 1951. In the mid-1980s, James Hardie pioneered the development of fiber-cement technology, and began designing and manufacturing a wide range of fiber-cement building products that made use of the benefits that came from the product´s durability, versatility and strength. In 1990, James Hardie Building Products began manufacturing fiber-cement building materials in the US. The market proved to be well suited for James Hardie. Through 2007, annual revenues grew year over year in excess of 15%, contributing to James Hardie becoming the market leader in fiber cement with an estimated 13% share of the overall siding market in the USA. Despite the housing downturn, James Hardie’s strong profits, cash flow and low debt leverage make it one of very few profitable building material companies in the USA.
James Hardie’s entrance into the US market, and initial skepticism that it would succeed, forced the US business to adopt an entrepreneurial spirit. Employees were challenged to constantly seek out ways to build markets or to improve processes. This spirit continues today.
