John Hancock – Why Work For Us?

Who We Are

From our humble beginnings in 1862 as a four person company formed in a single room, the name John Hancock, one of our nation's forefathers and the inspiration for our company, has long stood for integrity and commitment.

Today, we continue our tradition as a well established financial services leader by operating as the U.S. unit of Manulife Financial, a leading Canadian-based financial services group serving the financial needs of millions of customers in 22 countries and territories worldwide. Manulife Financial Corporation trades as 'MFC' on the TSX, NYSE and PSE, and under '945' on the SEHK.

undefinedOur Financial Focus

John Hancock's core retail products in the U.S. focus on providing financial solutions at every stage of our clients' lives. Our product suite includes life insurance, mutual funds, 401(k) plans, long-term care (LTC) insurance, and annuities. We distribute our products primarily through licensed financial advisors, and through John Hancock Financial Network, a national network of independent firms.

undefinedOur Social Focus

In addition to offering financial solutions, John Hancock is a vibrant organization that also focuses on making a difference - in our community, in the lives of our employees, and for the environment.

As a result of John Hancock's community and sponsorship presence, Boston non-profits received $11.4 million in support through grants, sponsorships, matching gifts and Boston Marathon fundraising in 2010, and our associates contribute more than 10,000 corporate volunteer hours each year.

Our commitment to the environment is illustrated in our business practices, and can even be seen in the construction of our 601 Congress Street headquarters in Boston. Our state of the art building won the American Institute of Architects' Building Award of Excellence, and received the EPA energy star; the building boasts an 11,000 square foot roof-top garden, and high-efficiency mechanical systems that reduce heating and cooling energy consumption by as much as 6% annually.

Our Commitment to Diversity

Today's landscape - in the markets we serve, the workforce from which we draw our talent, and the distributors and other companies we partner with - is experiencing generational, gender and cultural changes. It is crucial that we understand and respond to these dynamics, and make the issue of diversity a business imperative.

The demographics of the U.S. population are shifting dramatically:

  • Today's workforce mirrors the generational demographics of the broader U.S. population, which includes roughly 31 million Traditionalists (born prior to 1946), 74 million Baby Boomers (1946-64), 66 million Gen Xers (1965-80), and 86 million Millenials (1981-2000).

  • By 2020, 37% of the working-age population of the U.S. will identify themselves as African American, Hispanic American, Native American, Asian Pacific American, or Asian Indian America, more than doubling from 18% in 1980.

  • An established supplier-diversity initiative, through which the company actively seeks and promotes the use of qualified minority-owned and woman-owned business enterprises in all areas of the company's business.
  • Numerous internal initiatives to maintain and promote an inclusive working environment, from corporate mentoring programs, the Diversity Internship Program, to domestic partner benefits.
  • Active involvement by a number of employees in a range of organizations that meet the community's diverse needs as well as the Company's long-standing partnerships with organizations dedicated to promoting professional opportunities for all.
  • Community partnerships and specially designed community-outreach programs that are strategically designed to build the pipeline of diverse talent from which John Hancock recruits its workforce.
  • As a result of significant investments in affordable housing, John Hancock helps provide a high quality and safe place to live for a substantial number of low income individuals and families of all ethnic backgrounds.

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeksinterviewed at John Hancock.

    Interview

I applied through their online portal and got referred by an employee. They got back to me within 2 weeks and then scheduled my interview for the following week. I spoke with two people. The first round of the interview was with an actuary and the second round of the interview was an actuarial student. They both asked me about things on my resume, my working experience, and outside interest. They also asked me few questions about Excel, VBA, and Access (because I had these on my resume). I was asked to solve a logic problem which was pretty simple. Both interviewers are super nice and chill.
