Today, we continue our tradition as a well established financial services leader by operating as the U.S. unit of Manulife Financial, a leading Canadian-based financial services group serving the financial needs of millions of customers in 22 countries and territories worldwide. Manulife Financial Corporation trades as 'MFC' on the TSX, NYSE and PSE, and under '945' on the SEHK.
Our Financial Focus
John Hancock's core retail products in the U.S. focus on providing financial solutions at every stage of our clients' lives. Our product suite includes life insurance, mutual funds, 401(k) plans, long-term care (LTC) insurance, and annuities. We distribute our products primarily through licensed financial advisors, and through John Hancock Financial Network, a national network of independent firms.
Our Social Focus
In addition to offering financial solutions, John Hancock is a vibrant organization that also focuses on making a difference - in our community, in the lives of our employees, and for the environment.
As a result of John Hancock's community and sponsorship presence, Boston non-profits received $11.4 million in support through grants, sponsorships, matching gifts and Boston Marathon fundraising in 2010, and our associates contribute more than 10,000 corporate volunteer hours each year.
Our commitment to the environment is illustrated in our business practices, and can even be seen in the construction of our 601 Congress Street headquarters in Boston. Our state of the art building won the American Institute of Architects' Building Award of Excellence, and received the EPA energy star; the building boasts an 11,000 square foot roof-top garden, and high-efficiency mechanical systems that reduce heating and cooling energy consumption by as much as 6% annually.

Our Commitment to Diversity
Today's landscape - in the markets we serve, the workforce from which we draw our talent, and the distributors and other companies we partner with - is experiencing generational, gender and cultural changes. It is crucial that we understand and respond to these dynamics, and make the issue of diversity a business imperative.
The demographics of the U.S. population are shifting dramatically:
- Today's workforce mirrors the generational demographics of the broader U.S. population, which includes roughly 31 million Traditionalists (born prior to 1946), 74 million Baby Boomers (1946-64), 66 million Gen Xers (1965-80), and 86 million Millenials (1981-2000).

I worked at John Hancock (More than 10 years)
Absolutely the best company I have ever worked for; amazing people, amazing leadership, benefits and salary were top of the line. Endless resources for training, mentoring programs, opportunities to move throughout the organization, encouraged to grow and succeed. The Executive leadership has been exceptional for decades, and gets better with each succession. Keith Hartstein led the company in a progressive, ethically strong direction and Andrew Arnott has furthered that mission expertly. This company genuinely cares about its employees, investors, shareholders, and business partners. Top to bottom, the company ethic is to do absolutely everything possible to be a respected and trusted institution. Seek any opportunity to work at John Hancock. Be part of the best.
Leadership in some areas of the company had struggled to remain cohesive during a period of internal consolidation of branches of the organization. Excellent people departed the company, and that left huge holes and gaps. The people left behind have stepped up and steered the ship in an extremely positive manner. So, this isnt really a "con", but an example of how the company can navigate through tricky waters and come out shining.
Advice to Management
Continue to push towards excellence. Encourage employees to pursue many roles at the company, allow them to gain exposure. That is a great asset.
Getting an Interview
Getting an Interview
- Declined OfferNegative ExperienceAverage Interview
I applied through other source. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at John Hancock (Boston, MA).
Typical of a large shop, a junior HR recruiter calls for an initial phone screen for pay requirements and the availability for an interview. Arrived at building at was required to fill out a ton of paperwork. Met with the MF Director and another guy in her office. Both very nice provided a solid overview of the company, the culture at JH as compared to other mutual fund shops and the expectations for the job role. Questions were great and targeted to the job role and leadership responsibilities. Next, I was interviewed by 2 junior level managers. Both seemed unprepared and both just struggled to ask relevant questions. One was asking questions out of scope to try and stump me. Last I met with HR staff member to debrief the interview. Shortly after the interview I called HR to inform them that I was no longer interested in the position. Good senior level leadership in the MF area, though the junior level managers were as impressive.
