    I have been working at King County full-time for more than 3 years


    Work with some really smart and ambitious people.
    There are good opportunities to move around the county to different departments and divisions to try out new roles and responsibilities once you've proven yourself to people higher up the chain.
    Fair compensation for public service.
    Time off.


    There's always a couple of bad apples and at the professional level it can be hard to find a work life balance.
    King County will need to do a significant amount of work to prepare for the retirement of baby boomers and hand the reigns over to younger staff. There hasn't been enough transition and knowledge transfer for this process to go smoothly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Follow-through with the initiatives that are regularly announced with great enthusiasm only to silently die in the shadows completely unfulfilled and forgotten by the decision makers.

    I applied online - interviewed at King County.

    Interview Details

    Written exams
    Lately, there have been required presentations and in order to be truly competitive you would probably need to have first hand knowlege as a county or city employee.
    It sometimes seemed like the team tasked with doing the main portion of the interview process were interested in selling me on the job. Then after moving forward from the staff portion of the interview, if you do well, you will be asked to return to meet with council members and chief of staff. Council members were at times very engaged, but others were less interested in participating in the process.

    Very little negotiation allowed. Just an additional $2k to the Council's initial offer.
