I have been working at Kirby Corporation full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Kirby is a great company for job security. The company is economically stable and they make it a point to keep their employees informed on the company's progress. The benefits are great; they provide good health insurance, 401k and profit sharing.

    Cons

There is not much room for promotion or growth in the company. It seems that most people get into a position and stay there forever. The sad part is that you don't get the opportunity to explore other areas in the company and you don't get the opportunity to grow. The hours could be more flexible as well - 9/80s would be welcomed and so would a more relaxed dress code. The company seems to still have an old school mentality in that area.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide more structure in the H/R employee process. There was an excellent barge class provided at one time that several new employees have asked about, but no one seems to know when or where its occurring. Allow more work/life balance (flexible hours, 9/80s); relax the attire restrictions (esp. for those workers who do not interface with customers).

Where Kirby hauls cargo, the only curbs are riverbanks -- the company is the largest inland tank barge operator in the US. Its fleet, operated by subsidiary Kirby Inland Marine, consists of over 800 barges and about 220 towboats. The vessels are used to transport liquid bulk cargo: petrochemicals, crude and refined petroleum products, and agricultural chemicals. Major customers include Exxon Mobil affiliate SeaRiver Maritime and Dow Chemical, each of which accounts for over 10% of Kirby's sales.
