Family oriented company with a solid future. Good benefits and most of management is very good. CEO is excellent and sincere.

Divisional management is not as knowledgeable and hands on as they need to be. They often listen to people they have worked with for years as opposed to new hires who bring a new perspective and an expertise to the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to employes. Listen to those you paid recruiters to hire. Be open to new management ideas and methodology. Do not let loyalty to long term employees get in the way of making the best business decisions.

To Corporate Management- Talk to new management hires- get a feel for what they see in their first year of employment- Do not invest so much trust in your divisional top management.

    Application Details

I applied through other source. The process took 3 days - interviewed at Kirby Corporation in September 2013.

    Interview Details

I contacted and ad from Craigslist and received a call back after a few days. They don't need any experience, but take resumes when you go into interview. Interview was very rushed, very little information and the job is not explained well. They tell you your compensation, but do not mention you will be and independent contractor and if you do not meet their number of demonstrations required per a week you do not get paid. You also end up going all over the place and are not guaranteed you will meet your demonstration quota even though Kirby sets up the appointments for you.

    Reasons for Declining

After researching the company I realized that it was not a good fit for me. There were also many, many bad review about the company. Most people only stay for a few weeks and don't receive the pay they were promised.

Where Kirby hauls cargo, the only curbs are riverbanks -- the company is the largest inland tank barge operator in the US. Its fleet, operated by subsidiary Kirby Inland Marine, consists of over 800 barges and about 220 towboats. The vessels are used to transport liquid bulk cargo: petrochemicals, crude and refined petroleum products, and agricultural chemicals. Major customers include Exxon Mobil affiliate SeaRiver Maritime and Dow Chemical, each of which accounts for over 10% of Kirby's sales. Its Marine Transportation segment (inland/offshore operations) is joined by... More
