The best part of working at Knape & Vogt was the people. It is a very family-oriented business and there are a lot of good people who work there. The executive team is accessible and approachable.
Knape & Vogt is not a good place to work if you're looking to progress in your career. Their mentality seems to be that as long as you're getting paid, your title or job responsibilities shouldn't matter. They have yearly performance appraisal process, but supervisors don't really take it seriously. Good people have left the company because they get put in too small of a box without room to grow. Middle management has a "manage up" mentality and more interested in impressing the executive team rather than lead/develop their direct reports. The future of Knape & Vogt is uncertain. They are owned by an investment group whose ultimate objective is to sell Knape & Vogt. The corporate facility is outdated. Space is hard to come by. Old and broken chairs.
Advice to Management
Improve career development process. Give employees more opportunities to discuss their jobs, how they can add more value, and be challenged.
