In 1911, Frank C. Mars made the first Mars candies in his Tacoma, Washington kitchen and established Mars’ first roots as a confectionery company. In the 1920s, Forrest E. Mars, Sr. joined his father in business and together they launched the MILKY WAY® bar. In 1932, Forrest, Sr. moved to the United Kingdom with a dream of building a business based on the objective of a “mutuality of benefits” for all stakeholders – this vision serves as the foundation of the Mars, Incorporated we are today. Based in McLean, Virginia, Mars has net sales of more than $33 billion and six business segments including Petcare, Chocolate, Wrigley, Food, Drinks and Symbioscience.

The Five Principles of Mars

The Mars Five Principles of Quality, Responsibility, Mutuality, Efficiency and Freedom are the foundation of our culture and our approach to business. They unite us across geographies, languages, cultures and generations.

Our Five Principles are synonymous with Mars and have been guiding Mars Associates throughout most of our company’s history.     Pros

    Entrepreneurial spirit, opinion counts, strong principles, good compensation and benefits (although not as high as it was in the past),

    Cons

    Not for everyone - need to have a high tolerance for ambiguity, enjoy constant change, strive in less structured environment, be comfortable with collaboration and consensus as this is still the predominant way of working.

    Advice to Management

    Be wary of the pace and amount of change - for a large private company operating in mature segments, way too much change....

    Application

    I applied online. The process took a dayinterviewed at Mars in February 2015.

    Interview

    The phone screening interview with the department global director was set up by an HR contractor. The interview was strictly kept at 30 minutes with open ended questions and then about 5 minutes left for me to ask any questions. I could sense that the interviewer was in a rush and when I attempted to pay the company a compliment, I was rudely corrected. In addition, I was told that I would hear back from them within a few weeks and that it wouldn't be a long drawn out amount of time before I heard back. When over three weeks had passed, and I still hadn't heard anything, I contacted the HR contractor and now, over a month later, I have still heard nothing.
