I have been working at Michaels Stores full-time (more than 5 years)

The employee discount is amazing. Lots of opportunities to learn new crafts and other ways to use products besides how they were meant to be used. Always a lot of new products each season. Most of the time the customers are great to work with.

Never enough hours for most employees, very few full time positions. Too few employees wearing too many hats without any consistent training from location to location. Too much emphasis is now being put on email collection instead of great customer service. Cashiers are now being threatened with loss of jobs if they don't get a certain weekly percentage of "new" emails collected. returning customer emails don't count in this goal, they must be only new emails. This is extremely hard to do in locations with a high volume of repeat customers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Over the years I have worked with Michaels (yes I am a loyal employee most of the time) I have seen managers come and go, but no two seem to have the same goals or ways of meeting the goals to make the stores consistent and easy to shop. All new employees are fed the line; ""Michaels is "fun" place to work, we sell googly eyes and craft paint." or some similar version depending on the manager. A lot of times this is not true due to the stress level of the demands placed on both the store management teams and the hourly employees. The only real perk is the employee discount.

    Interview Details

The interview process is very easy. They ask you a little about yourself, ask if you like crafts and if so what kind. Want to know your availability. Might ask you about situations and how you would react but most interviews are around 5-10 minutes and very easy and basic questions.
