I worked at Minnesota Department of Health full-time for more than 3 years

I had a good experience working there for about 3 years. It was fulfilling work. The job prepared me for a long-term career and growth in public health.

Budget issues, both for jobs when there are budget cuts due to legislative action, and not having much of a budget to support the work you want to do. My salary was decent. But there were limited opportunities for growth within the organization. I've had better professional and salary growth opportunity where I am now.

    Application Details

I applied online. The process took 3 months - interviewed at Minnesota Department of Health in December 2008.

    Interview Details

Apply online - very controlled by computer
If you make it past the computer your resume is passed to the hiring manager
The hiring manager then chooses those to interview
I had two interviews with groups of people ranging from 3-5 people. Writing example.
One or two behavior based questions. Mostly generic tell us about yourself and work experience type questions.
Was offered job over phone roughly a week later

    Interview Questions
    • Describe a time when you have had a difficult coworker or customer and how you managed to work with them.   Answer Question
    Negotiation Details
Most jobs are union controlled. Was told I could not negotiate because of the union and HR rules. Thought I would be able to ask for a raise later. Came to find out salary is locked in once hired and no further salary increases are negotiable unless hired/promoted to a new position. I was hired at the bottom of the scale while others in my unit were hired at or near the top - somewhat DOQ.
    Accepted Offer
