OUR HISTORY
Muzak is proud to be an iconic American brand. When Muzak was founded in 1934, a new industry providing brand enhancing products and services was born. By utilizing cutting-edge technology to transmit music over power lines, Muzak was the first company to provide businesses with music services. We became known as the "elevator music company" because we provided instrumental music inside the newly invented elevators to encourage workers who were just beginning to go to work in skyscrapers. During the war years, Muzak delivered music programming to 1,400 nationwide factories as it became clear that music played a powerful role in creating positive and productive environments.
In the 1950s, new technology and innovation allowed Muzak to develop a franchise network, making our services accessible to local businesses nationwide. In the 1960s and 70s, Muzak expanded service offerings, developing drive-thru communication systems and delivering music via satellite technology. In the 1980s, Muzak embraced original artist music and introduced commercial television and messaging offerings, allowing clients to promote products and communicate directly to their customers at the point of sale.
In the 1990s, Muzak pioneered the concept of sensory branding by using audio architecture to create carefully branded environments, designed to enhance client brands and achieve specific business goals. In 1998, Muzak founded the Heart & Soul Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to redefining and supporting music education, celebrating our core belief in the power of music to make a difference.
At the beginning of a new century, Muzak centralized operations in a new Home Office location in the Charlotte, NC metropolitan area and continued to innovate to provide the best commercial media solutions to our clients. We introduced our Experience Design group to focus on developing integrated strategies for clients to combine music, voice, sight and sound in ways that enhance the customer experience. We launched a new Visual Solutions division and further expanded our delivery platforms to provide clients with new levels of flexibility and control over their services.
In 2011, Muzak was purchased by Mood Media Corporation. Our combined company is now the world’s largest in-store media company. Our comprehensive selection of products and services allows us to serve an expanding base of global clients in more markets with increased financial strength and stability.

Some things never change. We are passionate about creating exceptional customer experiences that create lasting value for our clients.
