Big companies have more budget for excess management layers, hiring numbers that preclude being too picky, and too few opportunities for people to distinguish themselves. That makes situations where politics are required for advancement much more likely. They have big revenues which can support substantial pay packages, have a hard time attracting senior talent, and advancing far enough can consequently imply a large compensation delta for more seniority. That really encourages people to play political games. Politics are still a problem when you don't care about advancing because there's less interesting new work than there are experienced developers to fight over it.
