Nationwide Building Society – Why Work For Us?

We've been voted as the best Bank/Building Society to work for in the UK, so you'll be in good hands.

We're the world's largest building society as well as one of the UK's largest savings providers and a top-three provider of mortgages in the UK. We're also a major provider of current accounts, credit cards, ISAs and personal loans.

With around 15 million members, we have a relationship with almost a quarter of the UK population.

In the first half of 2013/2014 alone we helped 30,400 people buy their first home. Since the credit crunch began in 2007, we've remained profitable against a very difficult economic environment.

In the first half of the year 2013/14 we made a strong underlying profit of £332 million - up 25% from the previous year.

We've demonstrated, time and time again, that we will remain true to our core building society principles - helping people to save, helping them to buy their own homes and helping them to make the most of their money.

Nationwide does something funny for money Comic Relief 2013

Nationwide's corporate citizenship ethos is a fundamental part of delivering our vision - to be the UK's leading retail financial services provider. Doing what is right by our members and the communities in which they live goes to the heart of what it means to be a mutual.

Our Living on your side strategy sets out three ambitious targets to be delivered by 2017:

  • Your Home: Our goal is to help 750,000 people to be in a home of their own by 2017
  • Your Money: Our goal is to empower 1 million people to start saving by 2017
  • Your Community: Our goal is to strengthen local communities by investing and unlocking £15 million by 2017

We strive to get employees involved in supporting the citizenship agenda as much as possible and we offer staff 14 hours paid leave each year to volunteer for local initiatives. You could be a part of delivering this agenda and join the largest building society in the world.

We have seen a four fold increase in the number of employees getting involved in citizenship activities this year, and we want to do even more in the coming year.

On Red Nose Day Nationwide employees across the country are getting involved in Citizenship by doing something fun for money including

  • Dressing down for the day and paying £1 for the privilege
  • National bake off competitions
  • In branch treadmill challenges
  • Branch managers shaving and waxing their heads and legs
  • 'Disco lifts' in the major administration sites

Nationwide is also providing call centre support on the night where over 400 employees will be on hand to receive donations for this worthy cause.

I have been working at Nationwide Building Society

    Pros

    - Management can be supportive of your outside life if you let them in
    - Always get a lunch break, even if it is 10 minutes they allow you to leave early or pay you for the rest
    - There are opportunities fr those who make the effort to look for them.

    Cons

    - It's not always a 9-5 job, I can be there from 8 - 5.30 sometimes, and as salary work, you won't get paid the extra.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Relay all the messages to all the areas so there can be no confusion.
    - Do what you expect everyone else to do, don't just preach it.

I applied online – interviewed at Nationwide Building Society.

    Interview Details

Standard initial online application. This was successful and I was asked to attend a face to face interview. The interviewers asked me to go through my CV and proceeded to ask me competency based questions. I used the STAR method when answering. Finished the interview by allowing me to ask questions about the role and company. Fair interview process.
I have not heard back from the recruiter yet, it has been over a week.
