Our Living on your side strategy sets out three ambitious targets to be delivered by 2017:

  • Your Community: Our goal is to strengthen local communities by investing and unlocking £15 million by 2017

We strive to get employees involved in supporting the citizenship agenda as much as possible and we offer staff 14 hours paid leave each year to volunteer for local initiatives. You could be a part of delivering this agenda and join the largest building society in the world.

We have seen a four fold increase in the number of employees getting involved in citizenship activities this year, and we want to do even more in the coming year.

On Red Nose Day Nationwide employees across the country are getting involved in Citizenship by doing something fun for money including

  • Dressing down for the day and paying £1 for the privilege
  • National bake off competitions
  • In branch treadmill challenges
  • Branch managers shaving and waxing their heads and legs
  • 'Disco lifts' in the major administration sites

Nationwide is also providing call centre support on the night where over 400 employees will be on hand to receive donations for this worthy cause.

A competitive salary

Reviewed annually.

Generous holiday allowance

24 days, increasing to 30 days per year. Pro rata for part-time workers


If you're over 16 and under 75, you automatically become a member of our contributory pension scheme when you join. We contribute 5% of your salary, rising to 9% after two years of service. If you decide to pay additional contributions we'll match them up to a maximum of 3% after two years of service. Under the scheme you can generally retire any time after age 55.

    - Management can be supportive of your outside life if you let them in
    - Always get a lunch break, even if it is 10 minutes they allow you to leave early or pay you for the rest
    - There are opportunities fr those who make the effort to look for them.


    - It's not always a 9-5 job, I can be there from 8 - 5.30 sometimes, and as salary work, you won't get paid the extra.

    Advice to Management

    - Relay all the messages to all the areas so there can be no confusion.
    - Do what you expect everyone else to do, don't just preach it.

    The process took 3+ weeksinterviewed at Nationwide Building Society.


    Online application following which I completed a telephone interview with competency based questions. Successful with telephone interview so next stage was face to face interview which involved more competency based questions which I tried to answer using the STAR method. A short role play concluded the interview.
