Great place to work overall. Some chronic issues as always.

I have been working at Naval Research Laboratory

    Pros

Hard to generalize for such a large research institution but IMO the people are great. In most places, someone down the hall will have the answer to your pressing technical questions. The scientific equipment is first-rate. If you are looking at a postdoc offer, you don't want to turn it down.

    Cons

The buildings are very old. There is a rodent problem in some buildings. The bureaucracy is oppressive - if you need to purchase something worth over $3k, good luck getting it approved within a month or two, even if you have the money. Want external funding for your project? Better have your fingers in some damn good pies. Security related bureaucracy can also be a huge timewasting issue, but perhaps it is in our best interests.

I applied online. The process took 4+ weeksinterviewed at Naval Research Laboratory.

    Interview Details

After applying online if you get an email from an employee who works there, you're already in the program. The "interview" they want to schedule with you involves mostly the employee talking about his or her work, and asking you if you think it's interesting. You could get 1-4 interviews, but you don't get to choose which employee becomes your mentor.
