I worked at Norfolk Southern Railway full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Large Company. Very stable, due to the high importance of rail as a national mode of transportation. Office Culture is traditional with some progressive leanings. Great Benefits. I highly recommend this company to anyone starting out of college, as the rigid structure of the company creates a great learning environment. If you are a person that is able to settle in for the long haul this is a great company to get in and stay in.

    Cons

Due to the size and age of the company it is difficult for them to be as progressive as the market/country is leaning. To be fair they have an eye on technology and advancement, but they are highly bureaucratic. They believe in 'paying dues' and this will require a long term of service and a high possibility of you moving around whether that means geographically or positionally is a per person decision. This is problematic if you want to specialize in a particular area.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

As a primary IT employee my view is biased, however the management I served under was stretched too thin to be as effective as it could/should be. A redesign of the architecture of that department's management structure seems to be ideal. The people are all great at their job, but the demands placed on them are seemingly too broad to make everyone as effective as they could/should.

On campus Interview. Very laid back... When my name was called I responded and went in to the interview room. As we walked there I asked about the night before. During the interview we talked about football and other things for a majority of the time. He had a few HR type questions to ask that were pretty much a breeze, but I really don't remember.
