NorthPoint Training Programs

Training is recognized as a “must-have.” Our program is designed to be flexible and supportive as opposed to overly structured and prescriptive.  

All NorthPoint consultants are offered the benefit of both dedicated time (days off) and hard dollars (stipends) for career development training. Whether in-house, on-line, or at external events through the NorthPoint Training Program it is highly encouraged. In addition, NorthPoint supports the pursuit of both technology and industry-specific type certifications. Managers and mentors help their team members identify areas where they should seek training. A review of continuing growth and career development is integral to the culture at NorthPoint and access to developer training, business skills, subject matter, etc are provided for PluralSight, and more.

NorthPoint Lunch and Learn Programs

The NorthPoint Lunch and Learn Program provides a great opportunity for our consultants to come together and share their knowledge, expertise, and client experiences. Several times throughout the year, NorthPoint consultants converge at our New York Headquarters for presentations from their colleagues while enjoying a catered lunch. These presentations can be focused on a new technology or the application of a particular technology solution, an area of business domain knowledge, or an interesting and relevant experience with a client. NorthPoint launched its Lunch and Learn program several years ago and it has been continuing with great success.

NorthPoint Management / Mentoring Programs

The Senior Management Team maintains a culture which promotes the constant improvement of professional skills and encourages learning and advancement of technical and business acumen. This type of culture keeps our people connected to the company in ways that deliver tangible benefits to the individual and to the organization, while promoting growth in roles and responsibilities. We realize this can be a challenge for any consultancy where people move from project to project and spend a significant amount of time at client sites.

To this end, NorthPoint established the Management / Mentoring Program. Within this program, each consultant has a dedicated Manager / Mentor who provides them coaching and guidance on projects. The Management / Mentoring Program also assists with the on-boarding of new consultants by helping them assimilate more quickly into our high performance culture.

NorthPoint Career Matrix

In order to consistently set expectations, define performance and provide a foundation for development plans, NorthPoint utilizes our own Career Matrix. Simply put, it is a comprehensive grid that serves as a guide for managing your career. Each role in the consulting organization is divided across four dimensions:

•    Delivery
•    Client Management
•    People Development
•    Business Development

General suggestions are provided by role and dimension, including requirements for each. Aspects of NorthPoint’s business, personal growth and targets are outlined.  These can serve as a general recommendation in a development plan. In creating a personal development plan for a consultant, a manager would expound or elaborate as necessary. In addition, benefits and business drivers for each are indicated to help align personal goals and organizational ones.

The NorthPoint system is a single operating platform of plug and play modules that can be added as business needs dictate. It is comprised of Trade Order Management, Portfolio Management, Securities Master, Price Master and Data Warehouse applications. NorthPoint Financial also offers Regulatory and Investor Reporting (RIR) that can be added to the platform or can stand alone, depending on client needs.

    Application Details

    I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 months - interviewed at NorthPoint Solutions in April 2014.

    Interview Details

    Initially a phone interview with the recruiting director, followed by 2 separate in-person interviews with Managing Partners. The managing partners were great. I also met with one of the senior members in Boston. At this point, I could really envision myself working here. The final step was a trip to New York to meet with the team

    Reasons for Declining

    The most difficult thing about Northpoint is the fact that there is a very large disconnect between recruiting and the partners. The partners will say one thing, and the recruiter will do the exact opposite. If possible, I would find any possible way to avoid the recruiting director (His name is Ian). He is extremely transactional and does not build a relationship with the candidates that would eventually be working for him. The disconnects that I discovered ranged from branding of Northpoint to failing to discuss and prepare candidates for what would be required during the interview process. If Ian were not involved, it would be a great company to work for.
