Great place to work, but the economy has taken its toll with a reduced workforce and increased expectations.

I have been working at Okaloosa County School District full-time for more than 8 years

Great benefits! The school district shuts down for 2 weeks over the Christmas Break, so it adds paid vacation time at a great time of the year. This is one of the top school districts in the state of Florida due to the great people who work here and the commitment to the students and their families. The military presence in the area really helps because for the most part, they have a higher interest in the academic success of their children. Pay rates, for the most part, are above average.

The economy dictates the budget each year. There is a published salary schedule in which the salary for a job is determined by the position, the employee's experience and education level, with an annual step on the years of experience. There are no bonuses for those that perform above expectations. There's not been a raise since 2007 for those that were at the cap level of the experience annual steps. Non-instructional employees are offered annual contracts with no guarantee of a job the following year, but most are renewed. It's an easier way to remove the non-performers. There is a good deal of politics at play here, in no small part dictated by the election of the superintendent (who is the CEO) and the the School Board members every couple of years. Those that support the incumbents, and those who choose not to, can expect consequences whenever election time rolls around.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Playing political favorites and putting supporters in key administrative positions as a reward often damages the dynamics in the workplace, especially when those supporters are not particularly competent for the job where they have been placed. The negative effect is compounded when the administrators are replaced and/or are moved elsewhere in the school district every couple of years.

    Negative Outlook
