Of course, we’re also known for our eco-friendly, hip workplace with a focus on transparency and mobility. No Styrofoam here…we’re a recycling office. Get your work done in your work area, soft seating areas, or anywhere you can catch a signal in our 100% Wi-Fi environment.

The Orbitz Culture - Life at Orbitz

We are avid travelers, technology gurus, and innovators. But above all…people with a passion to make a difference. Our entrepreneurial spirit and enthusiasm drive us to make a meaningful impact every day, while our intellectual curiosity compels us to stretch our minds and ask the tough questions. We have some of the smartest people working for us, and together we’re transforming the way the world buys travel.

We also know how to de-stress. If it’s not time for our legendary holiday party or summer picnic, you can always find a friendly game of foosball or ping pong around the office. Be on the lookout for the tournaments…they tend to get a little intense.

Watch: Our People - Where We Came From

Orbitz is dedicated to promoting and supporting sustainable tourism efforts. We remain focused on protecting our planet and improving the lives of those living on it. To this end, we launched a microsite in April 2007 focused on offering environmentally friendly travel options to customers (eco.orbitz.com). Through our partnership with CarbonFund.org, we enable customers to offset their carbon footprint cause by pollution related to travel. We also work to provide customers more eco-friendly hotel choices and auto rentals. In our offices, our employees lead by example as they start recycling programs, ensure the use of energy efficient lighting and enact other energy saving initiatives to reduce our consumption.

Orbitz also works to promote “voluntourism” within local communities. In 2007, Orbitz launched this initiative by creating volunteer.cheaptickets.com, in partnership with the United Way of America. We also give employees paid time off to volunteer and will, when possible, subsidize their travel needs should they want to take a volunteer vacation.

    Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Orbitz Worldwide (Chicago, IL).

    Interview

The interview process was relatively quick. The recruiter reached out via LinkedIn and after introductions scheduled a phone screen. After the initial phone screen with the recruiter was a technical phone interview with two or three developers. The next stage is generally a code test, though that may be waived depending on various factors. Lastly was a 3.5-4 hour in person interview in the office. This interview generally has 3 or 4 parts, some more technical than others and may depend on the specific role under consideration.

    Interview Questions

    • Given an input that consists of two parts, the first being a string representing the layout of an airplane's interior (like "ABC$DEF" where the "$" represents the aisle) and the second being a list of strings that indicate which seats are occupied on a given row, produce an output that shows which seats are open and which are occupied. The output had a specific format.   Answer Question
    • A burglar is attempting to maximize the amount taken from a set of houses on a street. However, the burglar cannot steal from consecutive houses. First, how would you maximize the amount taken from the houses if no values are known ahead of time? Second, if values are known ahead of time, how would you maximize?   1 Answer
