I have been working at Ottawa-Carleton District School Board as a contractor (More than 3 years)Neutral OutlookApproves of CEONeutral OutlookApproves of CEO
The school environment and working along teachers helps professionalize what we do in the eyes of the parents and the public. We learn a lot about implementing curriculum from the teachers and the teachers learn a lot about child development from the educators. The two elements are an effective combination.
A ten month seasonal contract makes it difficult to find summer employment. Our salaries are pro-rated for ten months which does not give us a living wage. Although the child care sector makes less per hour, the yearly take home pay for a school board educator in ten months with a 35 hour week is just over $30,000/year. This ends up being less than many child care centre staff.
Advice to Management
Relook at the wages and educational qualifications for early childhood education staff and implement a salary grid based on educational qualifications in order to retain staff in the long run. Open up more opportunities for career advancement as they are basically 'nil'.
