Employee TestimonialsWhat is it like to work at Overlake?

Employees insist that Overlake is different than other hospitals in that the hospital is small enough to create a caring, team environment-yet large enough to offer employees challenges and opportunities.

We invite you to read what employees have to say...

Trisha Marsolini

Staff Nurse-Inpatient Oncology
"Ever since I was a little girl I wanted to help people," says Trisha. And she does just that in her role on the patient care team, where she is the 'eyes and ears' for the physicians and other providers, and makes sure that care plans run smoothly. "The bonds you form with the patients and the team is like family. I always try to go beyond the needs of the patient and give them the best patient care possible. The team is always there for you...they give you wings and help you fly...and catch you if you fall. Overlake chose me! I grew up in Bellevue, did my training here and always felt comfortable in this environment. I was drawn to it. I love working at Overlake...the bonds with other people here help you get through life's challenges."

Estella Cheng

Patient Care Technician-Childbirth Center
Estella emigrated from Hong Kong 11 years ago and until recently, worked in the Environmental Services department. She qualified for Overlake's tuition reimbursement program and completed her Certified Nurse Assistant training, and then Overlake placed her in her current role. "I am so proud to be here!" she says. "I love this job, and the mother/baby unit is such a happy floor. The people are so friendly and nice. And there is always something new to learn. All of the nurses and doctors do a good job and by doing my best I help the team provide excellent care."

Alma Lewis

Hospitality Representative-Hospitality Services
The first thing people notice about Alma is her smile. The second thing is that she makes "the best coffee in town." She emigrated from the Philippines 13 years ago, seeking opportunity and equality in the United States. Alma primarily runs the espresso stand, but helps wherever needed throughout the Café. "I like to do a lot of different things and learn more skills. I don't get bored here, because I'm not only in one place. When you like your job, it feels good to go to work... The people here make this a comfortable place...they make you feel at home. Everyone is very nice and treats you like you're an important person. I like to work here, I love my job and I like what I do...that's why I stay!"

Dahlila Stell

Volunteer Resource Specialist
"In 2001 I started here at Overlake as a Patient Access Coordinator in the Admitting department. I advanced to the Lead position which I held until 2004. In 2005 I applied for a job in house that would offer me growth and other opportunities but allow me to maintain my benefits. I now share in the responsibility of maintaining our volunteer program. It is a joy and a privilege to be surrounded by Overlake Hospital volunteers. They are so impressive and dedicated. We have several volunteers that have been here for more than 35 years and if that isn't impressive enough our oldest member is 91 years young! These wonderful people make Overlake a very special place. I am often bombarded with positive feedback from the staff about the continual comtribution that our volunteers make to the various departments to which they provide service. They are a very big part of our friendly atmosphere."

Michael Wade

Manager-Diagnostic Imaging
"I help pave the way for patients to get the best care in the imaging arena," explains Michael, who manages a staff of 45 people. "It is a privilege to impact people's lives in a positive way. Patients are not normally here because they want to be...our goal is to make the experience the best it can be by being warm, caring and professional.... We have the best of all worlds...a tremendous staff, positive people, support from the hospital administration. Overlake is a forward-thinking organization...we continue to move ahead technologically and stay on top of the industry. I have never left and not wanted to come back the next day. I like showing up in the morning and really enjoy the part I play."

Physician Opportunities

The practice you’ve been looking for, a community that’s been looking for you.

Overlake Medical Center is seeking primary care and specialty physicians to join our growing network clinics located in the prosperous Eastside area across Lake Washington from Seattle.

With various practice models, Overlake and its richly diverse community offer you an excellent opportunity.

Washington state pairs metropolitan attractions with an abundance of recreational opportunities and spectacular natural beauty. Seattle, just minutes away, is one of the nation’s leading cultural centers offering world-class plays, concerts, art exhibits and dining. East King County offers excellent schools and vibrant neighborhoods.

Employee Recognition

Overlake places significant value on the service, commitment to excellence and loyalty of its staff with the following programs:

Bravo!

This is an employee recognition program designed to recognize extra efforts made by our employees. This program allows all employees to recognize their co-workers for going above and beyond, and provides for a variety of gifts such as movie tickets, latte cards and gift certificates.

Long-Term Service

Overlake recognizes the value of continued employment by rewarding employees for their length of service at the hospital. The hospital awards service pins commemorating each five years of continuous service. Our annual Employee Recognition Celebration honors those employees who have achieved 10 years or more of service at five-year intervals (10, 15, 20, 25, etc.)

Employee of the Month/Employee of the Year

True excellence deserves to be recognized. An employee committee selects the Employee of the Month from staff nominations. One of these employees is selected for the Employee of the Year award at the next year's annual Employee Recognition Celebration. Both awards come with a variety of well-deserved gifts.

Dr. Leland Ellis Volunteer Service Award

This award serves as a living tribute to the tremendous contributions made by Dr. Leland Ellis, a physician on active staff at Overlake from 1969 until his death in May 1989. Dr. Ellis believed fully in the principle of giving back to one's community. Each year, an Overlake employee is honored for his or her active community service at the annual Employee Recognition Celebration.

Employee Activities Committee

This committee's mission is to bring low-cost or no-cost activities to all hospital employees. For example, this committee works to provide discount movie, Wild Wave and Mariners tickets and free Seattle Art Museum passes. The committee also facilitates Overlake Hospital sport teams including softball, soccer and volleyball. These activities give Overlake Hospital employees a chance to get to know their co-workers better.

Benefits

Overlake is a professional workplace in which each individual is highly valued and rewarded for his or her service, innovation and commitment to excellence.

Overlake's compensation program reflects the organizational philosophy that an employee's total compensation–which includes base pay, pay premiums and non-cash benefits–will be market competitive. The following benefits are available to all eligible employees:

Benefits Eligibility

Your eligibility for benefits is based on your FTE (full-time equivalent) or, simply put, how many hours per pay period your position is budgeted for.

Here is a quick summary:

  • Full-time employees and part-time employees who hold a budgeted position of 48 hours or more per pay period are eligible for all standard benefits.
  • Employees who hold a budgeted position of 47 hours or less per pay period are eligible for specific programs.
  • On-call employees are eligible for programs that do not have a minimum hours requirement.

Family Benefits Eligibility

Medical and/or Dental Coverage

If you are eligible for and choose Medical and/or Dental Plan coverage for yourself, you may enroll these eligible family members, too:

  • Your spouse.
  • Your unmarried dependent children to age 25.
  • Your unmarried dependent children past the usual age limits, if mentally or physically disabled and still qualifies as a dependent.

Spouse and Child Life Insurance

Benefits eligible full- and part-time employees who purchase Supplemental Life Insurance coverage (optional benefit) may also purchase Dependent Life Insurance coverage for their spouse and eligible children.

  • You may purchase a maximum life insurance policy on your spouse equivalent to 50 percent of your Supplemental Life Insurance coverage. The cost of the spouse’s insurance is based on the age of the employee and the amount requested.
  • You may purchase a $10,000 life insurance policy on all eligible dependent children for one low monthly premium, provided you have elected Supplemental Life Insurance coverage on yourself.
  • This insurance pays a lump sum benefit to you if your spouse and/or eligible children die while covered under this plan.

Description of Benefits

Medical Coverage

It is important to us that you have coverage for both preventive healthcare and life’s unexpected medical issues. All three of our medical plans are designed with this priority in mind. You may choose from either the Premera Blue Cross PPO Basic Plan, the Premera Blue Cross Premium Plan or the Group Health HMO Plan.

Details regarding the differences in plans will be provided and discussed during your New Hire Sign-up Orientation.

Dental Coverage

Overlake partners with Washington Dental Service to cover preventive, routine and major restorative care. Washington Dental Service is Washington state’s largest dental benefits company and has an extensive list of member dentists from which to choose.

Life Insurance

Overlake provides Basic Life Insurance and Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) coverage at no cost for full-time employees, and Basic Life Insurance for all part-time employees in a budgeted position of 48 hours or more per two-week pay period. Covered employees may also purchase Supplemental Life Insurance coverage for themselves and Dependent Life Insurance coverage for their spouse and eligible children.

Long-Term Disability Insurance

If you are a full-time or part-time employee in a budgeted position of 48 hours or more per two-week pay period, we provide you this coverage at no cost. This benefit helps protect you and your family from loss of income should you suffer a disabling illness or injury that prevents you from working for an extended time.

Paid Time Off (PTO)

We offer Paid Time Off (PTO), which is used for vacation, holidays and sick days. All full- and part-time employees working at least 16 hours per pay period begin accruing PTO hours on their hire date and can begin using PTO hours immediately upon accrual, as authorized by their supervisor. PTO hours are accrued based on years of service, your job and the number of hours worked.

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)

This optional plan allows you to pay for healthcare insurance premiums and for eligible healthcare and/or dependent care expenses on a pre-tax basis. By saving you the money you would have had to pay in taxes, the plan can save a typical family hundreds of dollars per year.

Retirement Program

Overlake's three-part retirement program gives you a well-rounded system to save for a secure retirement.

  • Voluntary Employee Tax Deferred Program – The 403(b) allows you to save before-tax dollars toward retirement.
  • Overlake Contribution Plan – The 401(a) rewards eligible employees for saving with a 100 percent matching contribution of up to six percent of your annual salary (based on years of service).
  • Service Contribution Plan  The 401(a) provides eligible employees a two percent gross pay contribution.

I have been working at Overlake Medical Center and Clinics full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I have found Overlake Medical Center to be great place to work. The organization has a strong mission to "provide medical excellence everyday" along with an established vision, defined values and a "results orientated" culture. Compensation is fair and they offer an excellent benefits package including employer matching retirement funds and a generous paid time off program. The organization will listen to ideas and is not top heavy; you can talk to anyone from the CEO down. Management does not micro-manage and once you prove yourself, you are given lots of autonomy to complete tasks, etc. Great place for career minded employees with plenty of upward mobility. Healthy bottom line that allows the organization to focus on patient care and not finances.

    Cons

    Sometimes we run too lean.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Like most organizations, we all want to work at the to of our license/ability, sometimes we run too lean regarding admin support and ability to flex our workforce.

    Application Details

I applied online. The process took 4+ weeksinterviewed at Overlake Medical Center and Clinics in July 2014.

    Interview Details

Applied online and was contacted by a regular staff worker two weeks later. An interview was requested with the HIM manager, but had to be conducted within two days. This was very short notice. 1:1 interview with HIM manager was in her office. There were about 20 difficult questions that assumed working experience in this field. Several questions were odd and probably not part of the "script" the manager was supposed to follow.

A group interview was supposed to occur next, but I wasn't selected to continue in the process.
