PetSmart Charities is the leader in granting money to help pets in need, with more than $28 million given in 2012 throughout North America. 

We operate 196 in-store PetSmart PetsHotels dog and cat boarding facilities. These overnight boarding facilities feature associates who are hand-picked for their love of pets and at least one caregiver is always on the premises 24-hours-a-day. All of our PetSmart PetHotels and some of our additional store locations also offer Doggie Day Camp SM.

PetSmart® Grooming Salons offer a full menu including nail trimming, ear cleaning and teeth brushing. With our PetSmart® Look Great Guarantee You’re Happy or it’s Free, pet parents are guaranteed great looking results or the grooming services are free.

Dogs become more disciplined each year with help from our PetSmart accredited pet training instructors. And with our SmartPet PromiseSM policy, training customers are guaranteed 100 percent satisfaction or they can take the class again for free (see store for details)

Expert veterinarian care is available in more than 60 percent of our stores, where Banfield, The Pet Hospital®, operates full-service pet hospitals. These in-store pet hospitals operate independently of PetSmart® and employ more than 1,000 veterinarians who provide a full range of health care and emergency services. PetSmart® holds a 20.5 percent equity interest in Medical Management International, Inc. (MMI), the operator of Banfield, The Pet Hospital®.

Company History

1986-87
Our founders, Jim and Janice Dougherty, incorporate their pet superstore concept as Pacific Coast Distributing, Inc. in 1986. Our first two stores, originally called PetFood Warehouse, open in Arizona in 1987.

1988
Committed to helping save lives, all seven stores work with local animal welfare groups to hold fundraising and pet adoption events.

1989
We change our store name from PetFood Warehouse to PETsMART® and open our first full-service grooming salon as well as bird, fish and small pet departments.

1992
We open our 50th store as well as our first permanent in-store adoption center and veterinarian clinic.

1993
We go public on the stock market (NASDAQ: PETM).

1994
We open our 100th store and begin offering in-store pet training.

PETsMART Charities, Inc. forms as an independent, nonprofit organization and we partner with them to help save the lives of homeless pets.

 

1996
We open our first eight stores in Canada.

 

1998
We open our 500th store.

2000
We introduce our vision statement: To provide Total Lifetime Care SM for every pet, every parent, every time—which we do by offering superior products, unmatched services and superb customer service to pet parents and their pets.

2002
We start testing PETsMART PETsHOTELs® in two of our Phoenix stores.

2004
We launch PETsMART® PetPerks®, our customer loyalty program, to provide pet parents with better communications and valuable offers.

2005
We move away from the “mart” mentality and focus on our “smart” solutions—we become PetSmart.

2007
We open our 1,000th store.

2008
We open our 100th PetSmart PetsHotel®.

2010 
We partner with GNC and Martha Stewart to launch the first of many exclusive brands—GNC Pets TM and Martha Stewart Pets TM.

2011
We open stores in Puerto Rico and end the year with more than 50,000 associates.

PetSmart Charities introduces Enhanced Adoption Centers inside ten PetSmart stores. These full-scale centers are open daily, house dogs and cats, and are run by a local animal-welfare organization.

2012 
We celebrate our 25th anniversary and our five-millionth pet adoption through our partnership with PetSmart Charities. 

We extend our exclusive brands to include The Bret Michaels Pets Rock TM collection and Toys “R” Us Pets.

    I worked at PetSmart part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    The company is a chain, so the rules and standards are pretty black and white. I never got surprised by "getting called into the office for a talk" at this company because I tried my hardest to follow the rules and own up to and apologize for any mistakes I made. The Management sees a lot of different employees come through, so if you stay a while, work hard, and cover shifts, they will like you and be pretty helpful. (To be fair, 2 of the 8 or so managers that I have worked for at PetSmart were super kind, helpful, and understanding from day 1, but the majority take a while to get there.)

    Cons

    As I stated above, respect is earned at the 2 PetSmarts at which I have been employed. Some of the managers don't exactly start out warm and friendly to new employees. If you want a job where you have respect and a flexible schedule from day 1, this is probably not the best place for you. Work with them and they will work with you, but expect to put a little work in first.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    While the phrase 'Respect is earned not given' isn't exactly the kindest outlook on mankind, I understand that you see a turnover of employees that are not very motivated and you get tired of it. I suppose my suggestion would be to explain this to new employees and don't go over the top and get cranky with newbies over small things. Maybe sit them down and say something to the effect of what i said above, "Hey, look, John, we want to work with you and be helpful employers, but in this company we need a lot of structure, so what we need to see from you is that you are dedicated and diligent and that you want to work for us..." or something to that effect. I saw some people label managers as mean, when really, they weren't mean people, they just get frustrated with the turnover.

    the process is too long it may have as many as 5 or 6 steps it becomes redundant they can all ask the same questions in how you would handle your self and the expected out come if you do not get head spins as to the process. Find out what the pay range be for you spend the time.
