I have been working at Puppet Labs (Less than a year)
The CEO has good advisors as well as a good head on his shoulders, and the company is trying to take the long view. The perks (lunches, cute well-behaved dogs, pinball, kegs, semi-raucous Friday all-hands "meetings", nice headphones) are cool but I'm here because I get to work with incredibly smart, caring people, and we listen to each other, or at least, we try to. My team is really good and I respect what other teams are doing.
You have to deliver, and sometimes there aren't enough hours in the 40h week to get it all done, but you still really have to get it done. You're supported and even cared for, but a lot is expected of you, and no wonder - we sell really good software.
Advice to Management
Bring salaries up to industry standards - 3% raises yearly "standard" are not standard at all, and you will lose good people. I know two individuals who have left, VERY good people very well loved, who have left to make $20k more. Don't rely entirely on cool-factor and stability as reasons that people will join/stay. Stay just as exacting and demanding as you are with hiring.
Getting an Interview
Getting an Interview
- No OfferPositive ExperienceEasy Interview
I applied through an employee referral. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Puppet Labs (Portland, OR).
The interview process was smooth and pleasant. The initial interview was conducted via phone screen, with a follow-up email and phone call to arrange an on-campus interview as I moved through the process. The interview itself consisted of meeting with other members of the admin team, potential supervisors, and current Puppet Labs employees who acted as barometers of my potential "fit" with the company. All of this was clearly explained - the process itself was very transparent. During each interview segment, I was offered chances to ask questions or get clarifications. Although I was given a timeline for follow up, Puppet Labs took much longer in each instance (arranging the on-campus interview and informing me of their final hiring decision) than they stated. However, the last delay may be because I didn't get the position. They also called me a few weeks later to let me know - again - that I hadn't gotten the job, which makes me think there's room to improve the communication skills in their HR department.
- Several questions focused on how I would handle difficult situations or difficult requests from other employees. Answer Question
