Former Employee - Regional Development Officer in Brisbane (Australia)

I worked at Queensland State Government full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Working in the business arm of government is rewarding and provides varied work across a broad range of industries. You are in a position to influence policy as well as directly assist business growth. The benefits are in hours of work, flexi time, super, sick leave etc.

    Cons

People in charge as managers due to length of service or who they know, rather than ability. Too many public servants who are permanent and survive cuts backs due to their permanacy who do not perform. Managers need to instigate more thorough performance management tools - and not reward non performers who spend much of their day chatting, or on social media or come and go as they want. Interviews for positions can sometimes be determined by personal choices - needs more distance of interview panels and better training.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Instigate a reward system, undertake regular surveys on staff morale as well as ideas. Micro manage non performers - so that they either begin to perform for their excellent salary or move them out!
