I worked at RiverSource Life Insurance Company full-time (More than 10 years)
Excellent benefits -- PTO,medical and dental insurance, fitness center, ability to park bicycle in building's parking ramp for free, etc.
Department would go through "re-organizations" on an annual basis -- people laid off, teams combined, job titles changed. The reasoning behind the re-organizations were not well communicated or communicated at all, and transition plans were often vague or nonexistent. Focus on off-shoring as many processes as possible, without first examining potential risks. Feedback emphasized failures/mistakes, but seldom recognized positive contributions or successes.
Advice to Management
Department-wide and company-wide re-organizations are inevitable in large companies. Recognize that this creates upheaval and an actual "grief-like" response for all impacted employees (both those staying and those leaving). Whenever possible, communicate the rationale for the re-organization and why individuals were moved from one team to another. Ensure that sufficient capacity planning has been performed to properly manage any training or cross-training needs due to the re-organization.
