Our Purpose - What We Do

What are we here to do? Reduced to the very basics, we provide transportation services – you might say we pick up freight at a shipper and bring it to the consignee. We certainly do that – but consider why – what’s really behind that pickup and delivery? Some might say our purpose is to make money. Yes, we do need to be profitable, but that’s a basic requirement of any business. In order for us to continue to fulfill our purpose, we need profits to reinvest. But we define ourselves by what we say and the way we act – our purpose is more than merely producing profit. Our success is based on our ability to help our customers succeed. We provide them capabilities and services that they don’t have or can’t do for themselves. When they place their business with us, they’re saying we trust you, Roehl, to deliver on your promise of service. We’re often an extension of the shipper’s business, representing the shipper to their customers. We must satisfy not only the shipper but the shipper’s customers as well! There are a lot of competitors in our marketplace, and like us, they pick up and deliver freight every day. How do we set ourselves apart? What do we say and how do we act to define ourselves in the marketplace?

We distinguish ourselves from other trucking companies by leaning on the principals Everett recognized early on in his career – we succeed by delivering. More than simply moving freight from point A to point B – rather, delivering on the promise we made to the customer. The promise to provide flawless transportation services. As Everett said when we do that, “We’re delivering confidence and satisfaction for our customers.” We all know those feelings “confidence and satisfaction.” Confidence – for customers, it’s the feeling that once they’ve called Roehl there’s nothing else they need to do except pay the bill – that load is taken care of. And, satisfaction – the good feelings that come when your needs and expectations are met.
So what’s our purpose?

Our Values - What’s Important

As each of us grows up we develop a sense of what’s important to us. These are our values. Our values shape who we are and how we act. At Roehl Transport we’re growing and developing much like a person does. Our values have been shaped over the course of four decades in the trucking business. Our values describe what’s important to us and how we intend to operate on a day to day basis.

Like the bricks and mortar of a solid building, our values provide the solid foundation that guides and supports our behaviors. When we say Safety is our “cornerstone” value, it is reflected by our philosophy of Protective Driving. Priorities constantly shift and change. As the circumstances of the moment change, so do the priorities. Getting the groceries can usually wait till Saturday unless there’s a big storm coming this weekend. Then there’s the rush to the store for milk, bread and other essentials. Could you imagine if we treated safety that way—it can wait till the weekend until something comes up to cause it to be done now? That’s no way to treat safety. It has to be important all the time.

Values are deeply held beliefs beyond compromise. Values don’t change based on the circumstances of the moment. If honesty is one of your values, you don’t lie simply because it’s convenient. Values are enduring and guide our daily behaviors. We’re so very proud that Roehl drivers choose to treat safety as a value rather than a priority. By doing so, they recognize and behave in a way that shows that safety is important all the time and not simply a matter of convenience. Because they hold safety as a value, Roehl drivers don’t drive defensively, that is, trying to defend themselves from the motoring public. No, Roehl drivers try to drive protectively—that is anticipating, recognizing and adjusting to mistakes that others may make.

We realize that most motorists don’t share our values, experience or training, so we have a special responsibility to drive in a way that protects them— even from their own mistakes. Roehl drivers distinguish themselves because they drive to protect others—the sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, relatives and friends whom we love and cherish so deeply.

Our Maintenance Support Professionals keep our fleet of more than 1,700 power units and 4,000 trailers road ready and in top safety condition for our more than 1,600 drivers, who provide truckload services to over 7,500 customers. As a part of our Maintenance Team, you’ll enjoy a diverse work environment that is both interesting and challenging. The size and scope of Roehl’s fleet provide opportunities to perform preventative maintenance and repair work on truck types like Freightliner Century and Columbia as well as Internationals, most with Cummins or Detroit Engines under the hood. Our different business divisions (Van, Flatbed, Curtainside and Refrigerated) will help you grow your skill set with a variety of trailers including DuraPlate® van trailers, standard and step deck flatbed trailers, curtainside trailers and temperature controlled units.
