    I worked at Routledge

    Pros

Good opportunity to learn about academic publishing, as well as the responsibilities and tasks of editorial assistants.
Supervisors give you feedback on your performance. Most people are supportive, and friendly.
Good hourly wage for interns, considering that most publishing companies only offer college credit, and do not pay interns.
Interns do not have to spend extra hours reading manuscripts at home, since the work is mostly clerical and can only be finished on-site.

    Cons

It's very unlikely to get hired on a full-time basis after the internship is over.
The work might not be interesting or relevant to students looking for experience in literary agencies, fiction, or magazine publishing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please keep the internship program going.

    Editorial Assistant Interview

    Application Details

The process took 1 week - interviewed at Routledge in December 2011.

    Interview Details

Phone screen with HR, 1:1 with an editor. You're given a editing test, spelling test, an exercise on how to prioritize a list of tasks, and you discuss it with the editor as a way of outlining what the day-to-day of the job is, as well as the long term goals of whatever list you're working on. Took an edit test home -- had to write back cover copy for a book.

Would recommend familiarizing yourself with the subject area of what you'd be working on, and with higher ed news generally.
