    I worked at SUNY Downstate Medical Center

    Pros

    Although downsized recently, the facility gave me a year's notice in order to seek a position within the organization, I was fortunate to get my employment extended for an additional six months in another department. HR was proactive in setting up workshops for resume writing and to upgrade computer skills. With several unions in place, pay increases were usually given annually as opposed to private industry.

    Cons

    There was too much turmoil and changes in senior leadership which lead to uncertainty and fear in the workplace.
    Lay offs were done too broadly based on titles as opposed to actual work requirements.

    I applied through other source – interviewed at SUNY Downstate Medical Center.

    Interview Details

    I received a call from Human Resources 6.5 months ago stating my start date would be the following Monday morning. Later that day I received an e-mail from Human Resources stating "We will not be able to use Monday as an official start date for you. I will notify you when the Research Foundation will be able to appoint you to the payroll." I have been informed that there is a problem regarding the grant for my position. Human Resources suggested that I contact the department. The department suggested I contact Human Resources.
