I have been working at Saint Johns River Water Management District-SA full-time (more than 5 years)

This regional governmental authority is tasked with a great mission, protecting water resources in northeast Florida. Salaries are good, there is an excellent staff of scientists and engineers, and adequate resources to get the work done. There are a lot of opportunities to contribute ideas and work independently.

SJRWMD is a big, bureaucratic agency and It takes a long time to get things done. Salaries have been stagnant for several years. Groups within the district can be a bit insular and there is often lack of opportunities for collaboration between groups. There are no funds to attend out of state conferences. The republican led state government is hostile toward the water management districts' mission and has systematically undermined their autonomy and effectiveness. The governing board is stacked with industry representatives who know little about water management and environmental issues and who are intent on trying to make the district operate like a consulting firm.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Avoid the disruptions associated with constantly reorganizing the agency structure. Stop imposing onerous reporting duties on the scientists and allow them to do their work. Stand up to the political forces in Tallahassee that are undermining the district's work.

    Interview Details

I applied in July and was interviewed in October. I was interviewed by phone by a committee consisting of my future boss, an administrative representative, and several future co-workers. The interview lasted less than an hour and I was made an offer the following day. The interview focused on my technical skills and how I might respond in various situations. They asked about my willingness to accept additional responsibilities outside my immediate area of expertise.
