I have been working at Santa Cruz County CA Office of Education part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Very nice when students remember you and tell you that you are a nice substitute! Great when the same teachers request you again. Great to have daily flexibility so you don't have to work every day.

    Cons

Ugh not enough pay. A sub is a fully credentialed teacher often walking cold into a new classroom and having to establish boundaries and expectations that are pushed by the students. We should come closer to being paid an average pro-rated daily amount of what a regular teacher makes.

    Advice to Management

    Re-evaluate substitute pay scale please!

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at Santa Cruz County CA Office of Education in January 2008.

    Interview

The interview process was fairly casual and the IT group there is small. I was asked about my knowledge of various types of systems that I would need to support such as Windows and Active Directory, Mac systems, network monitoring tools, routers and switches, ethernet, TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, etc. It was considered a bonus that I had taken networking courses at Cabrillo, the local community college.

    Interview Questions

    • Asked about specifications of particular pieces of networking equipment such as Cisco routers.   Answer Question
