    Negative Outlook

    Pros

SERA's best strength is a culture that values the sustainability of the built environment, the Portland locale, and bicycling to work. Many of the people were great to interact with. Individual empowerment to effect change was idealized.

    Cons

Management is not skilled at leadership and nor are they pulling together to achieve a common vision. The subdivision of the company into studios led to rivalries, cliques, and boundaries between groups. IT was unnecessarily complex and difficult to navigate. Currently the company is going through an identity crisis: high design or analytical architecture.

    Advice to Management

Stop trying to make decisions by consensus while maintaining your separate areas of control. Be more transparent with financial information and decision making. Encourage real mentorship, leadership, and engagement instead of the self-sufficient individuality that is currently fostered.

    Application

I applied online – interviewed at Sera Architects in February 2014.

    Interview

H.R.( JB) displayed poor communication skills as it took her over a week of email tag to commence a phone interview. This began after i received a letter of interest from the firm's behalf. I responded to her memo about quickly conducting a phone interview, but to no avail. Randomly on a Sunday after weeks with no communication, she called for the interview after I specifically told her for a day in advance warning and during the work week. Overall, I do NOT respect a company whom cannot respect its (potential) employees.
