I have been working at Shawmut Design and Construction

    Pros

The people here are the best people I've ever worked with, and I've worked in many organizations and several industries, including finance, biotech, university, healthcare, and engineering industries. This place is unique, very few places have such a great people culture. The company is employee stock ownership, meaning employees all get to participate in profit sharing. The benefits are decent. There is a good entry program for recent grads with three one year rotations through each major area of general construction management.
Shawmut does high margin, I'd almost say boutique projects frequently. The company is in a growth mode and actively trying to innovate how technology is leveraged throughout the organization.

    Cons

Construction management is a demanding industry. Hours can be long, There is always an expectation of giving your all, and sometimes it can feel overwhelming. The technology infrastructure sometimes seems to be in catch up mode with the growth of the company. Because they do so many unique projects, it is sometimes difficult to leverage templates and repeatable process, there seems to be a lot of reinventing the wheel. There is resistance to flexible work arrangements, telecommuting is frowned upon, even for jobs that are purely in office.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Middle management needs to be empowered to be more than a conduit between upper management and individual contributors. Formal training needs to be developed further in the CMST program, and not just technology training.

I applied through college or university. The process took 3 weeksinterviewed at Shawmut Design and Construction in January 2015.

    Interview Details

Initally met with HR rep at my college career fair. I showed a lot of interest in this program (I knew about it long before the career fair). The HR rep gave me her card and said we should have a phone call. After our phone call she set me up with an interview in the LA office. I met with 4 different people for about 30 minutes each. I heard back about a week later that I moved on to the next round of interviews. I met with an additional 4 people, in the NYC office. I was offered the job the next day. Very good communication with HR, best I have ever seen.
