I have been working at Silver Valley Unified School District full-time

    Pros

They are desperate for decent candidates for employment in almost all areas. Far less competition to get hired. Definitely a great place to get your foot in the door and get experience so you can move on to teach and live in a better area. No out of pocket cost towards health benefits for certificated staff. Paid PPO Anthem Blue Cross Insurance $10 co pay can't get any better that that. Paid Dental and Vision too. Good opportunities to take on stipend positions too to make a little extra money. One of the best paying districts in the desert (Victorville pays more). They do hire interns as well because it is so hard for them to keep positions filled.

    Cons

Crummy area, nothing to do, eat lunch at Jack in the Box, Peggy Sue's, Subway, or Burger Den. No local grocery stores. Pretty much have to drive to Barstow for everything. Administration can be a little wacky. Unless you were born in the desert and plan on living your life in the desert, specifically Barstow area, then this isn't a place to stay for more than a couple years or you will risk getting stuck here. Get your experience and move on or buy a plot of land in Newberry and build your dream home and stay until you retire there really isn't much else.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Can't help the location, but do need to work on being even more competitive in pay in order to attract more applicants. Sub situation is also deplorable.

    Application Details

I applied online. The process took 4+ weeksinterviewed at Silver Valley Unified School District in February 2011.

    Interview Details

The test for School Secretary began with a typing test. They allowed 30 minutes so that you could take the 5 minute test several times in order to improve your score. The skills test was 90 minutes and consisted of questions about alphabetical order, a lot of math problems (including word problems), accounting questions, Excel questions and general questions ("What would you do if"). A calculator was provided. The staff at the district office is very professional. The score results were mailed quickly. The interview was a panel. They were very friendly and asked questions. Most of the questions can be found online if you search for interview questions for a school secretary.
