SolarCity – Why Work For Us?

Elon Musk at TED - 2013: "Solar will be the plurality of power within 20 years"

SolarCity Delivers Better Energy

SolarCity is a national leader in clean energy services. We make clean energy available to homeowners, businesses, schools, non-profits and government organizations at a lower cost than they pay for energy generated by burning fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas.

Our approach is to install systems to the highest engineering standards while making the switch simple for our customers. We've revolutionized the way energy is delivered by giving customers a cleaner, more affordable alternative to their monthly utility bill.

We call this Better Energy™.

Clean Energy Services on a National Scale

SolarCity is the largest solar electricity provider in the United States with more than 6,000 employees and 54 locations. SolarCtiy is currently serving 15 states, and providing more than one out of every four new systems in the United States.

SolarCity's customers include thousands of homeowners, more than 100 schools including Stanford University, government agencies such as the U.S. Armed Forces and Department of Homeland Security, and well-known corporate clients, including eBay, Intel and Walmart.

Are you passionate about the work you do? Do you feel a connection to the company you work for? SolarCity employees do! We start each day with enthusiasm about building a company that makes the world a better place... saving energy one customer at a time.

We believe in rewarding hard work, and hold several celebratory events throughout the year to reflect on our successes. We value the team members we work with as much as the work we do; ask anybody what they love the most about working here and they will say "the people."

The SolarCity team is smart, dedicated, open minded, fun, and composed of the industry's best. If this sounds like the right environment for you and you want to join a rapidly growing, award-winning, pre-public company with plenty of opportunities for upward mobility, we invite you to apply to SolarCity.

SolarCity's company values are an integral part of our day-to-day business operations. Our 8 values below help guide us every day in making decisions and running the company, interacting with employees and our customers:

  • We Are Teammates
  • We are Innovators who Welcome Change
  • We Change the World for the Better
  • We Act with Honesty and Integrity
  • We Provide Quality Workmanship
  • We Strive to Exceed Customer Expectations
  • We Are Anchored in Safety
  • We Strive to Lower Costs

Our values are also a key part of who we are when we get together outside of the office.

We are Teammates—We celebrate our people and successes throughout the year. We have two softball teams in the San Mateo corporate co-ed slow pitch softball league.

We are Innovators Who Welcome Change—SolarCity was recognized as the 10th most innovative company in the world on Fast Company's 50 Most Innovative Companies' list.

We Change the World for the Better—SolarCity has a dedicated Earth Team of SolarCity employees across all regions and departments. The Earth Team works together to support a culture that seeks opportunities to minimize waste, encourage sustainable decisions and create change.

We Provide Quality Workmanship—SolarCity loves to celebrate its people and successes. Throughout the year employees gather for parties to celebrate SolarCity's anniversary and the holidays.

These parties are entertained by SolarCity's own band composed of ten talented employees from varying departments within the company.

We Strive to Lower Costs—SolarCity utilizes technology to match employees interested in carpooling with other employees in their neighborhood.

For Those Interviewing at our Headquarters

1. Our recruiting team will review your resume very carefully and if your qualifications meet the needs of the position you applied to, we will pass it along to a hiring manager for consideration. Due to the number of applications we receive each day, we unfortunately are not able to reach out to every candidate directly, although you will receive an automated email confirming receipt of your resume.

2. If a hiring manager expresses interest in you from your resume, we will typically ask you to participate in a phone screening with Human Resources, during which time you'll have the opportunity to learn more about the position and tell us about your background and interest in the role. If there is mutual interest based on our initial conversation, we will ask you to participate in another interview, either by phone or at our offices.

3. During your first in-person meeting, you will likely meet with 2-5 SolarCity employees for about 30 to 45 minutes each. And we typically conduct 1-3 rounds of interviews for an open position.

4. Should you be an ideal match, we will speak to your professional references and conduct a background check before extending an offer. Drug tests will be conducted for positions that require driving and are safety sensitive.

For Those Interviewing at one of our Field Offices

1. The Hiring Manager (who is typically the Regional Operations Manager for the designated regional office) will review your resume. If a hiring manager expresses interest in you from your resume, he or she will call you for a phone interview and/or to schedule an in-person interview.

2. At your in-person interview, the Hiring Manager will discuss with you the position and ask about your job-relevant knowledge, skills, and abilities, and you will be asked to complete an employment application and a number of other related documents.

3. Should you be an ideal match, we will speak to your professional references and conduct a background check before extending an offer. A pre-employment drug test will be conducted for all field positions.

Preparation

While initial research of SolarCity likely led you to apply, please come to your interview(s) prepared to speak about how your background and experience align with SolarCity's open position and how you can contribute to our success.

Candidates for certain positions will be asked to take a brief quiz to assess job knowledge and skills or they may be asked to complete an assignment related to the position.

Good luck!

SolarCity is committed to hiring veterans for several reasons. First and foremost we recognize and greatly value the Veterans’ dedication in serving and preserving our Country and our freedom.  Solar City has partnered with the Military in our Solar Strong project in which it plans to provide solar power to up to 120,000 privatized military housing units, and create up to 300 megawatts of solar generation capacity.  It is Solar City’s intention to recruit the majority of the employees on these projects from the Veterans and Military community.

SolarCity has tripled its veteran employee population in one year.  We have hired a workforce development person dedicated to increase our veteran involvement and hiring.  Solar City, in partnership with Laney College, created and sponsored a CAD class for female veterans. Solar City in our commitment to employ and grow our veteran count has joined the Chase 100,000 Jobs Hired coalition.

I have been working at SolarCity full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

SolarCity is the leader of an industry with explosive growth on the horizon. Working for SolarCity gives you accelerated upward mobility opportunities that are rarely found in today's job market.

    Cons

Like any fast growing company, there are growing pains that come along with exciting new developments and processes. The best candidates for work with SolarCity are people who can not only adapt to change, but help create the path to success.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Due to our aggressive growth plans, SolarCity leadership has a tendency to marginalize the efforts of lower level position employees. I feel that the company is getting too top heavy.

Easy interview. Very responsive reactions. The process was longer than expected. I was surprised how much there was to do for an entry level position. Video interview was an awkward phase.
