SolarCity Delivers Better Energy

SolarCity is a national leader in clean energy services. We make clean energy available to homeowners, businesses, schools, non-profits and government organizations at a lower cost than they pay for energy generated by burning fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas.

Our approach is to install systems to the highest engineering standards while making the switch simple for our customers. We've revolutionized the way energy is delivered by giving customers a cleaner, more affordable alternative to their monthly utility bill.

We call this Better Energy™.

Clean Energy Services on a National Scale

SolarCity is the largest solar electricity provider in the United States with more than 6,000 employees and 54 locations. SolarCtiy is currently serving 15 states, and providing more than one out of every four new systems in the United States.

SolarCity's customers include thousands of homeowners, more than 100 schools including Stanford University, government agencies such as the U.S. Armed Forces and Department of Homeland Security, and well-known corporate clients, including eBay, Intel and Walmart.

For Those Interviewing at our Headquarters

1. Our recruiting team will review your resume very carefully and if your qualifications meet the needs of the position you applied to, we will pass it along to a hiring manager for consideration. Due to the number of applications we receive each day, we unfortunately are not able to reach out to every candidate directly, although you will receive an automated email confirming receipt of your resume.
2. If a hiring manager expresses interest in you from your resume, we will typically ask you to participate in a phone screening with Human Resources, during which time you'll have the opportunity to learn more about the position and tell us about your background and interest in the role. If there is mutual interest based on our initial conversation, we will ask you to participate in another interview, either by phone or at our offices.
3. During your first in-person meeting, you will likely meet with 2-5 SolarCity employees for about 30 to 45 minutes each. And we typically conduct 1-3 rounds of interviews for an open position.
4. Should you be an ideal match, we will speak to your professional references and conduct a background check before extending an offer. Drug tests will be conducted for positions that require driving and are safety sensitive.

For Those Interviewing at one of our Field Offices

1. The Hiring Manager (who is typically the Regional Operations Manager for the designated regional office) will review your resume. If a hiring manager expresses interest in you from your resume, he or she will call you for a phone interview and/or to schedule an in-person interview.
2. At your in-person interview, the Hiring Manager will discuss with you the position and ask about your job-relevant knowledge, skills, and abilities, and you will be asked to complete an employment application and a number of other related documents.
3. Should you be an ideal match, we will speak to your professional references and conduct a background check before extending an offer. A pre-employment drug test will be conducted for all field positions.

While initial research of SolarCity likely led you to apply, please come to your interview(s) prepared to speak about how your background and experience align with SolarCity's open position and how you can contribute to our success.

Candidates for certain positions will be asked to take a brief quiz to assess job knowledge and skills or they may be asked to complete an assignment related to the position.

Good luck!

SolarCity is committed to hiring veterans for several reasons. First and foremost we recognize and greatly value the Veterans’ dedication in serving and preserving our Country and our freedom.  Solar City has partnered with the Military in our Solar Strong project in which it plans to provide solar power to up to 120,000 privatized military housing units, and create up to 300 megawatts of solar generation capacity.  It is Solar City’s intention to recruit the majority of the employees on these projects from the Veterans and Military community.

SolarCity has tripled its veteran employee population in one year.  We have hired a workforce development person dedicated to increase our veteran involvement and hiring.  Solar City, in partnership with Laney College, created and sponsored a CAD class for female veterans. Solar City in our commitment to employ and grow our veteran count has joined the Chase 100,000 Jobs Hired coalition.

Great starting salary, huge potential for growth within the company, no cap on your income, excellent leadership and management, friendly working environment, and meaningful work!

If you aren't naturally friendly and you don't like dealing with people, you won't be good at this job, nor will you like it very much.

    Advice to Management

Make sure the new hires are naturally enthusiastic and friendly!

I applied online. The process took 4 weeksinterviewed at SolarCity.

I applied for a position on the company's website after seeing their job posting on CareerBuilder. A few weeks later, a recruiter contacted me to do an initial phone screening, which went well. However, she made some claims about the company that sounded fishy such as paying competitive salaries, offering great benefits, or being a top employer in the valley. First of all, their pay scale isn't on par with CA companies like Google, FB, Twitter, etc. In fact, you could probably find other not-very-popular employers that pay better. In terms of benefits, they only offer 14 days of PTO and no 401k matching. I've also read reviews where current employees said they worked long hours.

They scheduled a video interview with a third-party company that offers interviews as a service. The interview didn't go well at all. I got asked questions on SQL, web services, and algorithms. Questions weren't that hard, but the interviewer didn't give me enough time to do an in-depth discussion of my code to understand how much I knew. I was always asked to proceed to the next question because she assumed I knew my stuff. The last question, which was on algorithms, was somewhat frustrating. I wrote the code except for the part that was supposed to do some math which I could not remember during the interview. I believe that's what put me out of the candidate pool for the next round.

IMHO, if SolarCity wants to hire people based on how well they do on algorithms such is the case with top tech companies, then they should start offering great benefits and compensation otherwise they are a regular American corporation to me.
