The Zappos Family – Why Work For Us?

Why join us? For the past SIX years straight, Zappos has been recognized by Fortune as one of the 100 Best Companies to Work For, making our debut as their highest ranking newcomer. Find out why:

We're also proud to be rated Elite by StellaService, named as a J.D. Power Customer Service Champion and recognized for other prestigious awards by Fast Company, Inc. 500 and many others.

And . . . we’re hiring like crazy right now and looking for smart, forward-thinking problem solvers to join our world-class, fairly wacky team. Want to learn more? Check out our music video and see!

“A music video? I thought Zappos sold stuff?” Indeed we do… But we are so much more than that! The Zappos Family has a fun and creative environment where living by our Core Values is the name of the game. You love spreadsheets? Coding is your life? You live to shop and get to partner with our vendors every day? You deliver the “WOW” to our customers on the phones?

Well, in addition to all of that, you might just find yourself singing karaoke, leading an attack in a nerf gun war, competing in an oreo cookie eating contest, parading around as a pirate, or throwing a cream pie in our CEO’s face. And maybe, just maybe, you will star in a music video!

Check it out. You’ve really got to see us to believe us! Are we the right kind of environment for you? Ok, some may say we are a little fun and weird, but hey, it's a core value!

Our 10 Core Values:

The best thing about the Zappos Family is our unique culture. As we grew as a company, we didn’t want to lose that culture and we wanted a way to share it with all employees and anyone else who touches Zappos.

We Live

From day one new interns are given every opportunity to become a part of the Zappos family. Outside of the office Las Vegas offers an incredible array of activities for every type of person. Interns spend time at concerts on the strip, hiking in nearby mountains, boating on Lake Mead, eating fab meals and hanging poolside on sunny days (of which there are many). Interns are also invited to join community service activities that include beautifying hiking trails in Keen shoes, making furry friends at The Animal Foundation, helping kids in need at Goodie Two Shoes events, and more.

We Work

Our interns are placed within teams and given a manager and mentor to help them build technical skills, cultural competencies, and to coach interns on the proper execution of the Wobble. One of our core values is to pursue growth and learning so throughout their tenure interns are professionally developed, and coached to reach goals that they set with their managers early in the program. We genuinely believe that our unique culture can't strengthen and grow without new voices, so we host the intern culture showcase, where interns are asked to generate ideas on how we can scale our culture as we grow. Intern teams present to a panel of Zappos leadership, and the best ideas are implemented by the company!

We Play

Play isn't an afterthought at Zappos; it's a way of life. We'll take you downtown to experience the city lights and history of Las Vegas, maybe even zip line down Fremont Street (if you’re adventurous enough). In addition to downtown, we'll venture outside of our Las Vegas headquarters and see the real beauty Nevada has to offer. Around the office we celebrate random birthdays or anniversaries Zappos style with a parade and a whole lot of food. Be careful though, revelers caught wandering the hallways of our tech department may become the victim of one of our legendary Nerf gun fights. As an intern you are encouraged to create a little fun and weirdness in the office.

great company culture, sense of pride in work, sense that one can ascend through the ranks, feeling like you're part of something bigger

too much work / life integration sometimes. feeling like you have to take part in social gatherings or you'll be ostracized, can be a bit much.

    Application Details

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 6+ weeksinterviewed at The Zappos Family.

    Interview Details

There are several rounds of interviews in hiring processs.

First they asked me to write a small application. That primarily involved to build some logic for identifying all the combinations satisfying a given condition, and had to use Rest Api along with downloading images.

Then there was a telephone interview for an hour. Questions were very simple and focused on object modelling, basic java and sql. They also asked me to explain about my project. Asked me to explain about any important decision I took in the project.

This was followed by an onsite interview. I was asked to travel to Vegas for the interview. They will plan your travel verywell.

Onsite interview was very long. It started at 8:30 am and went till 5pm. Frankly I felt it was very long with several rounds. But I believe the hiring process is one of best ones I ever had. I gives you sense what they r looking for and gives you an idea how people are at Zappos.

Here is how my whole day at Zappos went. For first one hour they gave the tour of the company, showed us different departments. It was quite useful to know work culture at the company.

After that I had four technical and one HR(behaviorial) rounds. In two rounds they asked me to write algorithms like reverse a linked list, tree traversing algorthms, permutation and combination algorthms. They asked additional questions like time complexity and write alternate algorithms. You may also have to discuss about performance of what you write.

Second one was coding challenge, they asked me to write code to implement Lift. They give you one hour of time and would expect you it to run.

Third round lasted for 2 hours in which they focus on how you model and design applications. They give many applications, tweet it in different ways and ask you how would you design the system for each of them. I felt it very interesting but I felt it verylong.

HR asked many questions to see if your fit to the company work culture. It was of different kind n cool

    Interview Questions
    • HR asked many interesting questions. like which super hero do you like and why?   Answer Question
    • why should we hire you?   Answer Question
    • How are you different from others and make you unique?   Answer Question
    • what do you do in free times?   Answer Question
    • what movies did you watch in recent times? this was a followup question to previous question.   Answer Question
    • Did you ever suggest any thing to upper management to deal with any of the company or project level problem?   Answer Question
    Reasons for Declining

Offer was just OK when compared to what I am getting so don't want to change.

But I still recommend Zappos. It would be fun to work there. They give you good relocation package, joining bonus. Also don't forget it's a tax free state. Just evaluate if Vegas is a right place for you before going to interview. Not all may like the place.
