Ashley McMullin, Account Director

Tell us about yourself.

I started working at Top Hat a year and a half ago when I was recruited as an Account Director. I was so excited to learn more because of the company’s passion and amazing vision. Becoming an Account Director was an extremely exciting role for me. Everyday is exciting and new!

What is your favourite part of the day?

Lunch! Top Hat provides amazing catered lunches everyday and we all meet on the 13th floor and hang out together. Having the opportunity to create friendships and be part of this amazing culture is really what sets Top Hat apart!

What do you like most about Top Hat?

Being an Account Director is amazing because we have the opportunity to travel! We’re able to build real relationships with professors and see the impact we’re making in student’s lives. Exploring a new area is always a lot of fun!

Imran Khan, Regional Sales Manager

Tell us about yourself. 

I’m a Regional Sales Manager overseeing a team of 15 Account Directors. I joined Top Hat because I saw the potential of this product. Our unique sales process combines both local and enterprise aspects so every day is different with new challenges.

What is your favourite part of the day? 

I love working with my team and helping them succeed. Closing the deal and getting professors to use our software is awesome since we know we’re making their lives easier. One of the best things about working at Top Hat is that we’re able to see our efforts contribute to the company’s growth daily.

What do you like most about Top Hat?

If I could describe the people here at Top Hat in one word, it would be “motivating”. Everyone here is on the same mission and we always push each other to be better. Smashing the gong every day and being part of this exciting culture definitely makes my job a lot of fun.

What would you like our Glassdoor viewers to know about Top Hat?

Since I started working at Top Hat last year, there has been a lot of movement and growth. Our revenue and our sales team have been growing like crazy and being part of it has been an amazing experience. The people here are what drive the success of the company.


Alex Ehlke, DevOps

Tell us about yourself.

I started out as a fullstack dev on the web team but I saw the huge opportunity we had to invest in our software delivery pipeline itself, so our DevOps team was born! Now, we’re building out the tooling and automation that helps us move faster (WITHOUT breaking things).

What’s your favourite part of the day?

Since the rest of the engineering team is my customer, it's when I ship something that makes their lives easier, so that they can spend their cycles on the things that matter most.

What do you like most about Top Hat? 

We're changing education for the better, from inside of the system.

Every team in the company has great people I'm always learning from. We're in a great place as a company – we're experimenting in new areas while still having a core product that works.

    I have worked full time in both the Chicago and Toronto office. -Great culture. The company is full of young, smart, and ambitious people that just knowing will be an incredible asset in your career. -The upward mobility is getting much much better. The company brought in an outside management team to oversee sales and correct the lackadasical sales culture that was taking root. Since then there have been 3 internal promotions in Sales and greater recognition of employees throughout the company. -It's a hard problem. Education is a hard space, and Top Hat is cracking it very well. You will see very innovative solutions and approaches to a market that is largely unoccupied by succesful startups. -Lots of freedom for employees and personal intrapreneurship. People are given a lot of autonomy over how they pursue their job, and if they perform well are largely left alone. This means that you have to be a self-starter, but it also means your success is in your own hands. -The product is incredible. It is the best product in education and works exceptionally well. -If you are on Sales, you get to travel several times a year to college campuses which is a fun and unique experience. -Personal days, great vacation policy, and flexibility (within reason).


    -The free food sucks in Toronto. The number of employees has grown dramatically and the single chef is no longer able to keep up with that many people. (Chicago has an AWESOME stocked kitchen though). -Everything is utter chaos. This provides a lot of opportunity, but if you get anxious about disorganization this is not for you. -Leadership is largely inexperienced. The exec team is incredibly smart and talented, but most of them have never led a company before. The CEO has been working on it since a slew of feedback and it shows as his speaking ability, people skills, and management style have improved dramatically. -Not a 9-5 job at all. You will soon find yourself working late, working weekends, and hanging out with Top Hatters almost exclusively due to your schedule (current and ex-employees). This makes it feel very "culty" but in a great way.

    Advice to Management

    Offer more flexibility on work schedules. Marketing, Engineering, and Product has this (WFH days and flexible hours) but Sales is still lacking. A formal policy around # of WFH days a month/week/campaign would go a long way to improving employee satisfaction and accountability. Invest in corporate development (HR, Branding, Partnerships, Messaging, etc.). We aren't a "lean startup" anymore but a growing company quickly approaching profitability. Let's invest in showing it.

    I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Top Hat.


    They will grill you about your resume, your numbers, and almost try to catch you mixing up your numbers. Know your numbers in and out. Make sure you ask questions about the challenges the employees face and do not be afraid to ask if you could sit in a few calls to know what you are getting into.
