Travelzoo hires great people. Everyone at the company is very passionate about the content they produce and the members they serve. It makes you feel good to know that the team you work with genuinely cares about the clients and the members. The subject matter -- travel and lifestyle content -- is incredible. The offices are all in great cities and have nice amenities and great views. Management is very hands on and into the details.
For some, the intensity can be hard to manage. People work incredibly hard and the culture is very direct (I find that refreshing, but it's not for everyone). Things can start and stop a lot. Sometimes the company is so busy trying to execute on its plans that it forgets to communicate what its doing to internal parties.
Advice to Management
Stay the course. Keep focused on quality. Keep innovating.
Getting an Interview

- No OfferNeutral ExperienceAverage Interview
I applied online. The process took 5 weeks – interviewed at Travelzoo (Chicago, IL) in May 2015.
I applied online and was contacted within a few days to set up a phone call with the Global Recruitment Manager. The phone call was quick and basic with experience and interest related questions. They mentioned my experience might be better suited for an Associate Producer role which wasn't open that time but that they are always looking for people so she would like to move me forward in the process to complete the written assignment. I did not receive the assignment until I followed up nearly a week later. I thought this may not be as much of a priority since they were trying to fill the producer role first but still felt a bit lost in the shuffle.
The written assessment was pretty straight forward, it was surprising how quickly the time goes but I recommend just trying to be as creative as possible and to be familiar with their company voice. They confirmed that the completed assignment was received then a little over a week later I received a request for an in person interview. There was some mix up that a first email had been sent that I never received but we were able to work out a time fairly easily.
At this point I thought the in person interview was to talk with the Production department about the role in general possibly associate producer possibly still the producer role, it turns out it was in fact for the original Producer role that I had applied for, I thought it may reflect poorly on me that I was unclear on that going in and should have clarified while setting up the interview. No idea if they decided I was qualified or forgot that I was to go into the pool for associate producers.
While the location was fantastic in the heart of downtown Chicago the office itself was very underwhelming; especially considering how much they tout this as a huge company perk. It felt very sterile, nothing on the walls and overall bland and painfully quiet - the open floor plan does not seem to be fully embraced. Overall a basic office but I expected something a little more innovative based on the Travelzoo voice and how they aim to position themselves within the industry.
I thought the interview went really well, again pretty straightforward on my experience, felt very conversational. I was told at the beginning of the meeting that this was first round in person interviews and would be more steps. There were two projects including evaluating a previous top 20 and what I thought would have generated the most clicks and no Starbucks but very similar question on a hotel chains annual revenue. I used my basic knowledge and estimation for this but thought I worked through it sufficiently but think this may have been where I blew the interview because the rest of the meeting went so well.
2 days later I received a very standard rejection letter stating that someone more qualified had filled the position and was encouraged to continue to look for opportunities and apply again. I asked for any additional feedback on areas for improvement and was told again that someone else was a better fit for the role/team. Maybe this is true, there are plenty of variables, but it felt very abrupt after the whole process and what felt like a very positive interview. I did appreciate that they got back to me at all and everyone was kind throughout the process.
