I have been working at UMass Medical School full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Fantastic collaborative atmosphere. Great opportunities to branch out of departmental disciplines and apply methodologies and paradigms from other biomedical specialties. Competitive graduate student stipend. Very little politics and divisive management of projects within labs as a general policy.

    Cons

Lacks significant official coursework, so skill acquisition is very specific and self-determined. Not a great support system for career development outside of academia, though they are working on it.

    Advice to Management

Improve career path support outside of academia. Improve greater communication and understanding between the medical school, nursing school, and graduate school. So that in future endeavors outside of UMass Medical, students have a better understanding of the thought processes, methodologies, and goals of the three groups.

    Graduate Student Interview

    Positive Experience

    Application

I applied online. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at UMass Medical School (Worcester, MA).

    Interview

Apply via application form. Took the GREs, applied through a standard process. After a few months, heard back and was invited to interview. Interview was a three day event, with presentations on the University itself and what research was done here (with example projects from current students). Interviews involved 5 one on one interviews with faculty, each being about 40 minutes long. Interviews involved talking about one's past research experience, and listening to current research by the professor themselves.
