Usibelli Coal Mine scrapes the earth's surface to help keep the lights on in Alaska. The company mines coal and sells to power producers in the state's interior; three US military bases are major customers. It also exports to South Korea. Usibelli Coal Mine has proved and probable reserves of 700 million tons and produces about 1.5 million tons annually. Its mining project is the state's lone operating coal mine. The company was founded in 1943 by Emil Usibelli and is still run by his family.
