Our communities are good to us: we work, live, and play there.

Giving back to them is part of our culture, and VSP Global and our employees are dedicated and joyful participants in a number of outeach efforts.


We sponsor a paid volunteer program that gives employees an annual day of service, paid, to work in their community, and we promote such opportunities throughout the year.

Employees vote annually for corporate-sponsored charitable events, and we supply matching funds to support their community efforts.

Eyes of Hope is a global charity platform supporting activities that directly impact communities to give the gift of sight. United with one mission, multiple programs within the Eyes of Hope platform take on challenges involving access to eyecare around the globe.

To date, through our Eyes of Hope outreach programs such as VSP Mobile Eyes and Sight for Students, we've invested more than $165 million in free eyecare to more than 900,000 children and adults in need.

A Child Eye Health Project

We See is a VSP Global enterprise launched in 2014 with a visionary goal of providing eyecare for 30,000 children in Soweto, South Africa.

On April 10, we helped open a new eye health clinic at the Nike Football Training Centre in Soweto. Here are a few of the highlights:

  • Three local schools participated in the day’s activities, including some of the children that the team saw during a trip two years ago. Many of the children who received glasses in 2012 were still wearing them, and their teachers noted a positive impact in their participation and learning.
  • During the launch, 28 children who had been identified before the event received glasses for the first time. One student suffered from myopia (near-sightedness) so severe that anything past three inches in front of the child's face was effectively blurry.Several others couldn't see farther than an arm’s length or were fighting visual fatigue, headaches, and eye strain. Imagine the challenges to learning, playing sports, and just everyday activities with such reduced vision!
  • Representatives from the Gauteng Departments of Health and Education were in attendance and grateful for our participation in strengthening their efforts to increase access to healthcare within the community.
  • 15 local South Africa celebrities, including past and current sponsored Nike Athletes, participated in the day’s activities.

    I have been working at VSP Vision Care full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Innovation is becoming more and more central to the business model both within corporate culture and in our downtown Sacramento innovation hub (aka. The SHOP). We also have an east coast branch of The SHOP. Our CEO is incredibly forward-thinking. All leadership has an open-door policy, including our CEO. Benefits are great and comprehensive. While pay may not be the highest, it is benchmarked globally and is reasonably competitive.

    For those looking to build a career, the many lines of business at our Rancho Cordova headquarters offer endless opportunities. For those just getting out of college and not knowing where to begin, the call center is an incredible way to get your foot in the door and build a foundation both for moving up within or outside the company. HR offers a comprehensive list of career development classes.

    Diversity and fun are inherent in VSP's culture.

    Cons

    Some positions offer greater work-life balance while others do not. Members of leadership often struggle to connect with employees consistently during peak season.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Many of the initiatives introduced by HR seem to be impersonal and political. VSP needs to learn to present itself in a more authentic way both internally and externally, especially to younger employees and younger members. Innovation is not just coming up with great ideas for current customers. It's important to not fall behind or the company will quickly lose relevancy.

    I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2+ weeksinterviewed at VSP Vision Care in September 2014.

    Interview Details

    I arrived early. I prepared for days. I arrived 15 minutes early but was called in 10 minutes late. And when I went in for the interview, I was interviewed by an assistant who was told an hour before the sheduled interview time that she was interviewing me because the supervisor wasn't ready. I had this appointment for over a week. I left my house an hour and a half before the interview. ...so basically the assistant was told to interview me while I was driving there.

    The interview went very well. I even gave a portfolio of my writing, but I didn't get the job. They provided 0 feedback as to why. And now I've seen this position post 4 more times since my interview. I'm very qualified, if not almost over-qualified, for this position, but they treated me like garbage.
